QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team ended its regular season on Saturday (Nov. 16) in Pepsi Arena. The Hawks fell to the McKendree Bearcats 25-22, 15-25, 23-25, 21-25.
Alaina Rothermich and
Emily Rehagen each turned in double-double performances. Rothermich led the way with 15 kills and 14 digs, while Rehagen added 12 kills and 11 digs.
1st Set
The Hawks came out fired up on senior day.
Emily Rehagen and
Sarah Brown put down back-to-back kills before
Makayla Knoblauch served up an ace to put the home team up 3-0.
The Bearcats started to put small runs together to chip into the lead. McKendree eventually used a four-point run to take their first lead, 12-9.
Quincy responded by scoring five of the next seven points to go back on top, 15-14.
Alaina Rothermich tallied two kills and Rehagen added a service ace during the run.
As the opening set continued to go back and forth, neither team could gain a substantial advantage. The score sat tied at 22-22 before either team made a move.
That move was made by the Hawks. Quincy ended the set on a 3-0 run, capped off by back-to-back kills from Rothermich and
Stephanie Mizeur to give QU the 25-22 victory.
2nd Set
The highly-competitive match continued in the second set. The score was tied early on before McKendree rattled off three straight points to go up 8-5.
The Bearcats later used a five-point run to extend their lead to eight at 15-7.
Senior
Taylor King came into the game and stopped the visiting team's momentum by firing a kill. The Hawks picked up another point on a bad set by the Bearcats to cut the lead to 15-9.
Six points is as close as Quincy would get, as McKendree went on to take the second set 25-15.
3rd Set
The Bearcats carried momentum into the third set, jumping out to a 12-7 lead.
QU answered with four straight points, as
Emily Rehagen and
Sarah Brown each hammered two kills to make the score 12-11.
The game of runs continued, as McKendree fired off four points of their own to put their lead back at five.
The Bearcats looked to end things late in the set, up 24-21. The Hawks fought off two set points with kills from Brown and
Alaina Rothermich, but McKendree picked up the next point to win the third set 25-23.
4th Set
The Bearcats took an early lead in the fourth set before the Hawk offense came alive.
Down 7-5,
Lauren Worl slammed down back-to-back kills to even the score.
Emily Rehagen followed that up with three straight kills to put the Hawks up 10-7, forcing a McKendree timeout.
The visiting team used the timeout to stop the QU momentum and battle back to tie the set at 15-15. The bearcats proceeded to go on a 6-1 run and looked to close things out.
The Hawks did not go down easy. QU scored the next four points, as Rothermich picked up another kill and
Sara Rathbun added a service ace to get back within one at 21-20.
QU's comeback came up short, as McKendree went on to take the fourth set 25-21 and secure the 3-1 victory.
