Box Score ROMEOVILLE, IL – The Lewis Flyers men's soccer team defeated the Hawks of Quincy University behind two goals in the last twelve minutes of the game. Lewis defeated QU 2-0 on Sunday afternoon (Hawktober 6).
1st Half
The men's team came into Sunday's match looking to respond from a road loss on Friday at UIS. They matched up with a 6-1-2 Lewis team.
Lewis came into the game top two in the conference in both goals allowed (4) and goals against average (0.45). The defensive play of both teams was the focus in the first half.
The two teams combined for eight total shots while both the Flyers and Hawks had two on goal. Lewis had the first two shots in the opening ten minutes but both missed the mark high.
Macker Little put a shot on freshman goalkeeper C.J. Couper in the 11
th minute, but his shot was denied.
The Hawks tested Couper again in the 21
st minute.
Cooper Reis sent a shot into the lower right portion of the goal but Lewis made the stop to keep the game scoreless.
The Flyers next shot on goal did not come until the 42
nd minute as the Hawks back line kept Lewis out of their defensive zone. The home team's shot was placed low towards
Adam Whybrow, but he scooped up the save before the half.
The score sat at 0-0 going into the locker room.
2nd Half
The Hawks had a pair of early corner kicks to start off the second half, but they were turned away both times.
Aubrey Reis tried to beat the Lewis keeper in the 53
rd minute, but the Flyers did not budge.
Over the next twenty minutes, QU got just three shots off as the Flyers tried to establish time of possession.
The Flyers finally broke through in the 78
th minute to make the score 1-0. Lewis kept their foot on the gas as they added another goal less than two minutes later.
Alexis Robles-Ibarra scored his second goal of the game in quick fashion to stun the Hawks late in the game.
QU showed fight by mustering up two more prime scoring chances. In the 85
th minute
Macker Little missed just over the cross bar, and
Anthony Christante was turned away on a wild save in the 87
th minute.
The Hawks were shut out as Lewis held on for the 2-0 win, dropping their second straight GLVC contest.
