Bellarmine Outlasts Hawks in Home Opener

QUINCY, IL – The Quincy University women's volleyball team looked to get their first conference win in their home opener against Bellarmine University on Friday night (Hawktober 4). Quincy was unable to down the Knights as they fell 25-21, 25-15, 25-20. 

1st Set
The Hawks attack came out aggressive to open the contest. Senior Stephanie Mizeur slammed three kills as Quincy scored the first five points of the match. 

After jumping out to a 5-0 lead, the Knights came right back. Three straight kills later in the set brought the score to 6-4 QU. 

Bellarmine came all the way back just a few points later. Another 3-0 run allowed BU to tie the score at 9-9. 

Emily Rehagen notched a kill later in the first set which brought the score to 12-12. Bellarmine proceeded to go on another run that allowed them to gain their largest lead at the time. Five straight points by the Knights gave them a 17-12 lead. 

Quincy showed fight late in the opening set. QU was down 22-17 before three straight points made the score 22-20. Bellarmine called timeout to stop the momentum. 

The Knights came out of the timeout and sealed the first set win 25-21. 

2nd Set
After an early 2-2 tie, Bellarmine rattled off six points in a row to jump in front 8-2. Head coach Mark Jones called a quick timeout to rally his team. 

Following the timeout, Bellarmine continued to roll. The Knights tallied another six points to extend their lead to 14-2. 

Quincy got some life back in them after scoring the next five of six points. This brought the score to 15-7 BU. 

Bellarmine's lead was too large to overcome as the Knights held on for the remainder of the set. BU won set two 25-15. 

3rd Set
The Hawks showed more life at the start of the third set. Two straight Bellarmine attack errors gave QU an early 5-4 lead. 

Sarah Brown notched a kill that gave Quincy an 8-6 lead. Brown also scored QU's next point with another kill that brought QU's lead to 9-7. 

Kills by Emily Rehagen and Sarah Brown gave Quincy a 12-8 lead and all the momentum. Bellarmine called a timeout to talk things over. 

Out of the break, the Knights scored three straight to cut the Hawks lead to one. After another point by the Hawks, Bellarmine tied the score at 13-13 with a pair of kills. 

Quincy returned the favor with a 3-0 run of their own fueled by a kill from Emma Lynch. This allowed QU to move ahead 17-13. 

The Knights did not go down easily. Bellarmine tallied the next five of six points to tie the game 18-18. 

After a point by Bellarmine, Emily Rehagen tied the game at 19-19 with a kill. From that point, Bellarmine won four in a row to move two points away from winning the game. QU called timeout.

The Hawks scored the first point following the timeout, but Bellarmine scored the next two points to seal the straight-set victory. BU won the third set 25-20.
