QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team and Southern Indiana went into halftime even, but the Screaming Eagles scored in the 89
th minute to defeat the Hawks 2-1 in GLVC play at Legends Stadium Sunday afternoon (Hawktober 27).
1st Half
The Hawks were the aggressors at the beginning of Sunday's match. QU earned three corners in the first 17 minutes and broke through on the last one.
Spencer Van Nest controlled a second ball off of a corner kick in the 17
th minute and let a shot rip. Van Nest's shot was blocked by the Screaming Eagle defense, but senior forward
Justin Armfield was right there to collect the rebound and put it in the back of the net. Quincy led 1-0.
The next shot of the game came in equalizing fashion for USI. Ryan Nevins got behind the QU defense in the 34
th minute and scored to tie it at 1-1.
The Screaming Eagles outshot the Hawks 4-0 the rest of the way, but Quincy's solid defense kept USI out of the net. The teams stayed even at one heading into the half.
2nd Half
QU started the second half much like the first, on the offensive attack.
Alsadiq Hasan hit a low, curving shot in the 51
st minute, but USI goalie Justin Faas made a diving save to deny the attempt.
Aubrey Reis found daylight and got a shot off just six minutes later, but Faas made the save once again.
The Hawks were only able to muster one more shot on goal the rest of the game. The final chance for QU came in the 82
nd minute as Hasan put another one on frame, but Faas was there to collect it.
The Screaming Eagles forced a corner kick in the 89
th minute and made it count. Drew Albert got on the end of the service and notched the game-winner.
The Hawks fell 2-1 in the final minutes for the second-consecutive game.
