#19 Bearcats Score Twice In Last Five Minutes To Stun Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team faced a McKendree Bearcat team that came into Friday (Hawktober 25) night's GLVC matchup having won nine straight games. The Hawks scored early but gave up two late goals as the #19 team in the country defeated QU 2-1.

1st Half
The Hawks came out with a sense of urgency in Friday night's GLVC match up at Jack Mackenzie Field. Quincy was able to get on the board in just the 4th minute of play. Anthony Christante scored an unassisted goal after making a move on the far side of the goalie box. Christante found a slither of space near the far side goal line. The senior forward hit his shot into the net from a difficult angle to put the Hawks ahead 1-0.

The Bearcats nearly tied the game just three minutes later. McKendree had a header shot hit the post on a free kick cross, but the ball bounced away as QU remained in the lead.

A minute later, MU tested QU goalkeeper Adam Whybrow. The Bearcats sent a shot on goal in the 7th minute, but the senior stepped in front for the save.

The remainder of the first half was fairly quiet for both teams as the Hawks were not able to get off any more shots, and McKendree missed two shot attempts wide.

Quincy went to the locker room ahead of the Bearcats 1-0.

2nd Half
The Hawks kept McKendree out of their defensive zone for the better part of the first half and looked to do the same in the second half. For the first twenty minutes after the intermission, QU was able to do that. The Hawks controlled possession of the ball and kept the Bearcats away from their goalie box.

The defensive battle continued for a majority of the final half of play. After halftime until the 76th minute, both teams combined for seven shots with none being on goal.

A big moment in the game came in the 78th minute as Cooper Reis settled a feed and sent a shot towards the goal. Reis' shot bounced off the post and away from the net as the Hawks nearly had a two-goal lead.

As the 85th minute approached, QU looked to hold on for just five more minutes, but the Bearcats had other plans. McKendree got a neutralizing goal in the 85th minute from their leading scorer James Stone. MU tied the game 1-1 with five minutes to play.

The GLVC-leading Bearcats were not done as they shocked QU with a go-ahead goal with 35 seconds left on the clock. James Stone scored on a strike from near the top of the box to seal the win for the Bearcats. QU fell 2-1.
