ROLLA, Mo. – The Quincy University men's soccer team got a gritty road win over Missouri S&T in double overtime 2-1 on Sunday afternoon (Hawktober 20).
Joel McIlroy scored his first goal of the season in the second overtime period to lift the Hawks past the Miners.
1st Half
Quincy traveled to Missouri S&T having dropped their last two GLVC contests.
Anthony Christante was the first to rip a shot in the 4
th minute, but he missed wide right.
Just before the 10
th minute of play,
Cooper Reis was able to challenge the Miners keeper with a shot towards the lower right corner. Nick Posey of S&T slid in front of the shot to keep QU off the board.
The Hawks were persistent on the offensive end as they tallied another shot on goal in the 18
th minute. This time, Christante sent a shot towards the net, but Posey made the save.
The Miners sent their first shot on goal in the 20
th minute, but QU goalkeeper
Adam Whybrow made the save. Missouri S&T continued their attack as two shots by the Miners were blocked back-to-back in the 24
th minute.
Evan Garcia had one of his shots blocked in the 30
th minute, then had another shot saved in the 34
th minute of play.
The Hawks were able to muster just one shot from the 33
rd minute until the half as both teams went into the break scoreless.
2nd Half
After outshooting the Miners in the first half 8-5, the Hawks looked to keep up the offensive pressure. Quincy got two shots off in the first five minutes after halftime.
Cole Hayes missed wide on his shot a minute into the second half.
Cooper Reis followed by sending a shot towards the net but had it saved in the 48
th minute of play.
The next twenty minutes of play remained quiet as neither team took another shot until the 68
th minute. The Miners got a shot on goal, but Whybrow was able to corral the save.
In the 70
th minute, the Hawks nearly took the lead, but
Aubrey Reis saw his shot hit the post and ricochet out leaving the score at 0-0.
Reis stayed engaged on the offensive end and got a scoring chance in the 73
rd minute. The Quincy native scored the game's first goal on a feed from
Evan Garcia to put QU ahead 1-0.
The Hawks lead was short-lived as the Miners were awarded a penalty kick just a minute after the goal. Missouri S&T converted the PK try which tied the score at 1-1 with fifteen minutes left in regulation.
Quincy got off three more shots in regulation with two of them being on goal. Both shots on goal were saved as the game went into overtime.
OT
Scoring opportunities were few and far between in the additional ten minute overtime. In the last two minutes, the Miners had a free kick from just outside the goalie box.
Quincy's defense cleared the cross out of their defensive zone. The Hawks made one last surge as
Anthony Christante sprung free in the last sixty seconds of play.
Christante got a long feed and got behind the defense for a break-away, one-on-one opportunity. Posey slid into Christante as he tried to make a move around the goalkeeper as the ball went out of bounds.
The Hawks had one last corner kick with twenty seconds left, but nothing came out of the try. The game went into its second overtime period tied 1-1.
2OT
In the second overtime, both teams exchanged shots in the first three minutes.
Adam Whybrow made a save in the 101
st minute, and
Cooper Reis missed a free kick at the top of the box high over the net.
The next shot would prove to be the difference.
Joel McIlroy scored his first goal of the season in game-winning fashion with a strike in the 105
th minute.
Cooper Reis sent in a free kick that was headed towards the goal by
Aubrey Reis. Off the header cross by Reis, McIlroy came streaking in with a header shot that found the back of the net to give QU the 2-1 victory.
