INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team concluded the Midwest Regional Crossover with a 3-2 victory over Northwood University on Saturday afternoon (Hawktober 19).
The Hawks had three players reach double-digit kills.
Emily Rehagen led the way with 21, while
Stephanie Mizeur tallied 15 and
Sarah Brown added 11.
Makayla Knoblauch notched her third straight double-double with 54 assists and 19 digs.
1st Set
Northwood gained momentum early, jumping out to a 6-2 lead. The Hawks fought back and cut the lead to one at 14-13 after kills from
Stephanie Mizeur and
Sarah Brown. The Timberwolves took advantage of two QU errors to go on a 5-0 run and extend their lead to 19-13. Quincy was unable to draw any closer as Northwood took the opening set 25-18.
2nd Set
The Timberwolves won the first point of the second set, but the Quincy offense started clicking after that.
Makayla Knoblauch served six straight points for the Hawks, including two aces.
Emily Rehagen also put down a kill during that span as QU led 6-1. The Hawks later used back-to-back kills from
Stephanie Mizeur to start another 5-0 run and take their largest lead of the set, 22-10. Mizeur continued to stay hot, knocking down the final point to give QU the 25-14 set victory.
3rd Set
Quincy kept rolling to start the third, going ahead 10-3. A Timberwolf service error and two
Alaina Rothermich kills brought the Hawks lead to nine at 17-8. Northwood did not go down easy, cutting the QU lead to three at 23-20. The Timberwolves run was not a problem for the Hawks, as
Stephanie Mizeur and
Lauren Worl teamed up for back-to-back kills to end the set. QU won 25-20.
4th Set
The fourth set was the tightest between the two teams, with seven ties and two lead changes. Quincy used kills from
Emily Rehagen,
Makayla Knoblauch, and
Sarah Brown to go up 12-8 midway through the set. Northwood put together a couple of four-point runs to retake the lead at 18-16. Rehagen fired down two kills to tie the score at 20-20. The Hawks were unable to complete the comeback as the Timberwolves took the set 25-22, forcing a fifth set.
5th Set
The gym was loud and the crowd was large at The Academy Volleyball Club during the fifth set, as the floor was surrounded by a number of other GLVCÂ and GLIAC teams. With all eyes on Quincy and Northwood, the Hawks rose to the occasion. QU went ahead 8-5 after a
Sara Rathbun service ace and multiple kills from
Sarah Brown,
Stephanie Mizeur, and
Alaina Rothermich. The Timberwolves cut the lead to two multiple times, but timely kills from Rehagen and Brown kept the Quincy lead intact. Leading 13-11, the Hawks forced two Northwood errors to seal the deal. QU took the final set 15-11 to wrap up the 3-2 victory.
