QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball dropped its second game on Sunday at the hands of Saint Xavier University 3-1.
Play by Play
1st Set
At the start, both teams played evenly. The score was notched at five a piece after the first ten points.
Brendon Estrada and
Omari Wheeler were the first to collect kills.
The Hawks were able to gain some distance ahead of the Cougars with four straight points. The score was 12-9 and SXU called timeout.
After the timeout, the Hawks scored back-to-back points to extend their lead to 14-9.
The Cougars responded by going on an 8-2 run to regain the lead 17-16. QU called timeout to try and slow the Cougars' momentum.
St. Xavier kept the pressure on the Hawks and forced another QU timeout after the score reached 21-18.
SXU held on for the opening set win 25-22.
2nd Set
The Cougars continued where they left off in the first set. Three straight points led to a 6-2 SXU lead and an early call for time by head coach
Gavin Mueller.
Blake Sprecher collected a kill after the short break to get the Hawks within three.
SXU continued to keep the Hawks on their heels. The Cougars were able to gain their largest lead of the day at 12-4.
Quincy went on the attack and scored four straight. St. Xavier called time with their lead at 12-8.
The Hawks were unable to cut the SXU lead to under three until an attack error on the Cougars cut their lead to 21-19.
Quincy could not complete the comeback and fell 25-20.
3rd Set
Quincy got off on the right foot to start set three. After an attack error on the Cougars tied the score at 3-3, the Hawks scored the next four of five to create a 7-4 lead.
QU clung to their lead throughout the second set. Their largest lead was just five points after a service ace by
Thomas Robson gave the hawks a 21-16 lead.
St. Xavier cut Quincy's lead to just two after a three point swing brought the score to 22-20 Hawks.
Blake Sprecher kept QU alive with a kill to cap off a 25-22 third set win.
4th Set
The Cougars got off to a 7-3 lead in the fourth set forcing a QU timeout.
The Hawks chipped away and got the score within two points after another kill by Wheeler. QU trailed just 14-12, but St. Xavier quickly scored two points to move back ahead by four.
Quincy later trailed 17-14 when a run of four out of five points allowed QU to tie the score at 18-18. St. Xavier broke the tie with three points in a row.
The Hawks called for time to regroup, but trailed the remainder of the way and dropped the set 25-19.
