Spagnola and Gronewold Collect Career Highs in Win Over UMSL

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team ended a four-game losing streak with a 77-65 win over Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday. Maddie Spagnola and Michaela Gronewold combined for 52 points in the victory. 

Play by Play
1st Quarter
The Tritons got off to a quick seven point lead in the first three minutes. With 6:54 left, UMSL held a 11-4 lead. 

Grace Schraufnagel scored the next basket for QU to make the score 11-6. The Tritons connected on a 3-pointer on the following possesion, and Alexa Low answered back with a made mid-range jump shot to bring the score to 14-8. 

After another 3-pointer by UMSL made the score 17-8, the Hawks ended the quarter on a 7-2 run. Quincy trailed 19-15 going into the second. 

2nd Quarter 
The Hawks continued to ride their momentum with a big second quarter. Quincy's offense exploded for 27 points in the quarter. 

In the first two and a half minutes, QU got on an 8-2 run to gain their first lead of the game 23-21. 

Quincy held onto the lead up until the five minute mark in the second quarter. After a bucket by Missouri-St. Louis brought the score to 29-27, the Hawks offense gained some separation. 

An 11-0 run by QU allowed the Hawks to pull ahead 40-27 with under a minute and a half to play in the quarter. Alexa Low had six points and Michaela Gronewold had five points to fuel the run. 

At the break, Quincy led 42-31.

3rd Quarter
After the intermission, the Hawks started fast with the first four points. This extended their lead to 15 points 46-31. 

Half way through the quarter, a 3-pointer by Gronewold and a lay up by Taylor Hickey gave Quincy their largest lead of 21 points. The score sat at 55-34.

The Tritons ended the quarter strong to bring the game back within reach. UMSL outscored the Hawks 14-5 in the final five minutes of the third quarter to make the score 60-48.

4th Quarter 
Maddie Spagnola kept her team in front throughout the fourth quarter. The sophomore point guard had 14 of her career high 29 points in the fourth quarter alone. 

UMSL was unable to get closer than eight points in the final quarter as the Hawks held on for their fifth win of the season.
