QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team fell to Maryville 84-57 on Thursday night (Jan. 17). The Hawks struggled to contain the Saints' three-point shooting as Maryville made 14 shots from beyond the arc.
Play by Play
1st Quarter
In the first three minutes,
Michaela Gronewold and
Alexa Low scored early baskets for the Hawks. The Saints countered with a basket and a three-pointer to make the score 5-4.
Maryville then went on an 8-0 run over the next four minutes.
Taylor Hickey stopped the bleeding with three minutes to play in the quarter with a made lay up. The Hawks trailed 10-6.
Hunter Stidham of Maryville knocked down corner 3's on back-to-back possessions to put Maryville in front 16-6.
The Hawks trailed 19-12 after a lay up by
Maddie Spagnola in the final minute of the quarter. Stidham made another 3-pointer with 10 seconds left and gave MU a 22-12 lead going into the next quarter.
2nd Quarter
Quincy started off hot in quarter number two.
Aleksandra Petrovic made a mid-range jumper to start the quarter. Petrovic then connected from behind the arc on the following possession to make the score 22-17.
Michaela Gronewold got her team within three points with a fast break layup. The lay up capped a 7-0 run for the Hawks as they trailed 22-19 with 8:43 to play.
Over the next five minutes, Maryville went on a 15-2 run. The Saints connected on three 3-point attempts to help fuel the swing. MU led 37-21 with 3:50 to play.
At the break, the Hawks trailed 47-27.
3rd Quarter
Maryville came out of halftime with a 7-2 run and extended their lead 54-29.
Quincy showed fight by scoring seven straight points.
Dami Adeyinka,
Kennedy Prince,
Lexi Doyle, and
Taylor Hickey all scored during the run as the Hawks trailed 54-36.
With 3:30 to play in the third, Maryville pushed their lead back to twenty after a made mid-range jump shot. The Hawks could not chip away at the lead and trailed 67-46 going into the fourth.
4th Quarter
The Hawks were outscored 17-11 in the final quarter. The Saints got a 84-57 victory as QU had 19 turnovers in the game with MU converting those turnovers into 22 points.
Kennedy Prince was the bright spot for the Hawk offense by collecting a career high 15 points. Prince also went 4-4 from the free throw line and contributed five rebounds, and two steals.
