QUINCY, Ill. - The back and forth battle between the Quincy Hawks men's basketball team and the Maryville Saints came down to the game's final tenth of a second. A desperation tip-in was knocked away by the Hawks and QU defeated Maryville 73-71 for their second GLVC win of the season.
Play by Play
1st Half
The Hawks offense went head to head with Saints leading scorer, Casey Teson. QU took an early 5-2 lead after a basket by
Aziz Fadika and a three-pointer by
Jah-Kobe Womack.
Womack scored six straight points for QU and the Hawks held a 8-4 lead with 16:48 to play.
Trailing 10-4, Teson scored four straight points to trim the Hawks lead to 10-8. Womack answered the run with another three-pointer to push the lead back to five with 14:38 to play in the first half.
Quincy attempted to build a larger lead, but the Saints hot shooting in the first half kept the game tight. Midway through the half QU held a 18-17 lead.
Jah-Kobe Womack pushed the Hawks lead to three after a layup with 9:43 to play in the half.
A 12-2 run by Maryville gave the Saints a 29-22 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the first half.
Back to back jumpers by
Demetrius Houston and
Marcus Hinton brought the Hawks within three.
With 4:33 to play in the first half, the Hawks and Saints sat tied at 30-30.
Womack and Hinton scored nine points for the Hawks in the final portion of the first half and gave QU a 39-38 lead headed into the locker room.
2nd Half
Aziz Fadika got the scoring started after a scoreless minute and a half between the two teams.
With the score favoring QU at 41-40, the Hawks used an 11-0 run to take a 52-40 lead.
Quincy led 55-44 with 11:29 to play in the game. The Saints clawed back with a 10-0 run to bring the Hawks lead to 55-54.
Two straight scoring possessions by the Hawks extended the lead back to five with 8:32 to play.
Zach Colletta scored five of Maryville's next seven points to give the Saints a 67-62 lead.
With 4:31 to play, the Saints held a 69-64 lead.
Demetrius Houston drained a long three-pointer and
Aziz Fadika scored on a layup to tie the score at 69-69 with 3:21 remaining.
Both teams scored on their next possession and the game remained tied with 2:36 to play.
Senior
Marcus Hinton scored the go-ahead basket to put QU in the lead 73-71.
An empty possession by the Saints gave the QU the ball back with a minute to play.
The Hawks used 45 seconds of game clock following a missed layup and an offensive rebound. The Hawks committed a shot clock violation to give the ball back to the Saints.
Maryville's Teson got a clean look from 15 feet away but his shot was off the mark. However, the Hawks could not corral the rebound and the Saints another opportunity. A deflected inbounds pass allowed for 0.1 seconds remaining on the clock.
The Hawks knocked away the final inbounds pass to secure the two point win.
