LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Quincy University women's basketball team was unable to pull off a 22-point comeback against Bellarmine University on Thursday evening.
Maddie Spagnola and
Aleksandra Petrovic combined for 42 of the teams 66 points.
Play by Play
1st Quarter
Bellarmine got the first two baskets of the contest and quickly led 5-0. The Hawks answered with a 3-pointer from the wing by
Michaela Gronewold.
After a mid-range bucket from
Alexa Low made the score 7-5 BU, the Knights went on a 7-0 run.
Aleksandra Petrovic ended Bellarmine's run with a made jump shot on an assist from
Grace Schraufnagel to make the score 14-7.
The Knights mounted another run to gain their biggest lead so far in the game. BU scored the next seven of eight points to move in front 21-8.
The Hawks were able to battle back and cut the lead to just 24-16 before the second quarter.
2nd Quarter
Quincy's offense went cold in the second quarter.
The Hawks shot just 2-15 from the floor and managed just five points.
Ella Gobald,
Alexa Low, and Gronewold scored in the quarter.
Bellarmine led 43-21 at the half.
3rd Quarter
Head coach Jeni Garber rallied her team coming out of the halftime break. The Hawks showed added defensive pressure and forced seven turnovers in the third. QU turned those seven turnovers into 10 points.
Quincy's offense outscored BU 20-7 in the quarter after opening with fourteen unanswered points.
Maddie Spagnola had 11 of the teams 14 during the swing. Quincy cut Bellarmine's had to 43-35 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.
When the buzzer sounded at the end of the quarter, the Hawks slimmed their deficit to nine trailing 50-41.
4th Quarter
The final quarter started sluggishly. Neither team scored in the first three minutes.
Jessica Merino got to the free throw line and made one of two attempts to end the scoring silence.
Aleksandra Petrovic scored on the next Hawks possession, but Bellarmine responded quickly to make the score 52-44.
In the next minute, the Knights made three straight field goals from beyond the arc. Quincy was able to combat the deep shooting with a three from Petrovic, a layup from
Maddie Spagnola, and a pair of free throws by
Lexi Doyle. The score sat at 61-51 with under three minutes to play.
QU trimmed the lead to just six points after a three pointer buy Spagnola. QU trailed 63-57 with 1:15 to play.
Bellarmine's free throw shooting in the final minute allowed them to hold on. The Hawks fell 73-66 after being down by 22.
