QUINCY, IL - The Quincy University women's volleyball team defeated Missouri-St. Louis in five sets on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 29). The Hawks won 25-23, 21-25, 25-14, 15-25, and 15-12.
Play by Play
Set 1
The Hawks came out of the gates first with two quick points.
Baylie Stephens and and
Stephanie Mizeur each collected early kills to go ahead 2-0.
The Hawks remained ahead 9-6, but UMSL was able to answer back. UMSL gained the lead after a six point run which made the score 12-9.
With Quincy leading 20-17, UMSL's head coach was carded for arguing a call on a Quincy service ace. The Hawks went up 21-17.
The Tritons tried to make a run late by skimming the Quincy lead to 24-22.
The Hawks held on and took the first set 25-23.
Set 2
The Hawks started set two with back-to-back kills from
Sarah Brown. The Tritons would battle back and tie the game at 4-4.
QU went ahead again after a bad set and an attack error by UMSL. The Tritons answered by scoring on two straight kills to notch the game 8-8.
After the tie, Missouri-St. Louis stayed in command. UMSL led 19-13 at one point before taking the second set 25-21.
Set 3
The Hawks won a big point early. Both teams exchanged a long volley before
Taylor McMonagle came in to collect the kill and tie the score at 5-5.
Quincy went on to rattle off six straight points later in the set to gain a 15-9 lead and force a timeout by UMSL.
Both teams exchanged the next four points to bring the score to 17-11.
QU made another run to extend their lead. The Hawks scored five in a row which made the score 22-11.
The Hawks held the lead the remainder of the set and won 25-14.
Set 4
In the fourth set, both teams exchanged the first four points leading to a 2-2 tie.
UMSL gained the next point and did not trail the rest of the way. Quincy cut the lead to one after a kill by
Stephanie Mizeur.
The Tritons stayed in control and forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-15 win.
Set 5
In the final set, Quincy came out firing. The Hawks jumped ahead 8-2 forcing a timeout by Missouri-St. Louis.
UMSL made things interesting by making a comeback late. The Tritons were able to bring the score to 14-12 after scoring eight straight
The Hawks would score the next point for the 15-12 win.
It was the Hawks' third straight win.
