Bearcats Offense Too Much For Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. - The McKendree Bearcats scored the first 34 points of Saturday's game to beat the Hawks 48-14.  The Bearcats high powered offense was too much for the Hawks in the first GLVC matchup of the season.  

Play by Play

1st Quarter

The Quincy offense took the ball for the first possession of the game.  

The Hawks moved the ball to their own 48-yard line after several positive plays against the Bearcats defense.  

On the fifth play of the opening drive, Tionne Harris' pass was intercepted and the Bearcats took over at their own 45-yard line.  

McKendree tried a flea-flicker on their opening play, hoping to catch the Hawks defense off-guard.  Senior linebacker Cody Leonard read the play and sacked McKendree quarterback Reece Metcalf.  

On the next play, Metcalf found a receiver for a gain of 20 yards to the QU 42.  

The Bearcats moved the ball down to the QU 21-yard line.  On 3rd and 2, the Bearcats were stopped as Cody Leonard met Jace Franklin at the line of scrimmage for no gain.  

McKendree's kicker Josh Lazaro hit a 37-yard field goal to give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead with 9:37 to play in the first quarter.  

The Hawks were forced to punt on their next possession and gave the ball back to the Bearcats.  

QU's defense continued with the bend but don't break attitude on the next possession.  After plays of 24, 16, and 12 yards the Bearcats had the ball at the QU 15-yard line.  The Hawks defense held firm and held the Bearcats to another field goal.  

McKendree led 6-0 with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter.  

The Hawks offense found its rhythm at the end of the first quarter.  The Hawks moved the ball down to the McKendree seven-yard line as the quarter came to an end.  

2nd Quarter

On fourth and one, Tionne Harris got the first down at the McKendree five-yard line.  While fighting for extra yards, Harris fumbled and the ball bounced back to the McKendree 14-yard line.  The Hawks fell on the ball but it would be a turnover on downs.  

Both defenses forced punts until the Bearcats took over with 7:17 to play in the half.  

The nation's leader in touchdown passes, Reece Metcalf finally found his rhythm on the drive.  Metcalf found Jalyn Williams for a 23-yard touchdown to put the Bearcats up 13-0.  

On the Hawks next possession The Hawks moved the ball down to the McKendree 18-yard line.  

On first and 10 at the 18, Tionne Harris was sacked for a loss of 11 yards.  The Hawks were called for a delay of game on the next play to move the ball back to the 34-yard line.  After a one-yard rush by Andrew Rund, the Hawks lined for a 50-yard field goal.  

Michael Klotz field goal had the distance but went wide right.  

The Hawks defense forced a punt and the Hawks took a knee to send the game to halftime with the Bearcats leading 13-0.  

3rd Quarter

Quarterback Reece Metcalf completed three passes on the second half's opening drive including a three-yard touchdown to Jayln Williams to give the Bearcats a 20-0 lead.  

After another Hawks punt, the Bearcats found the end zone again on a seven-yard touchdown rush to give McKendree a 27-0 lead.  

QU's offense continued to struggle and punted with just under six minutes to play in the third quarter.

Reece Metcalf used his legs to score the Bearcats third touchdown of the quarter to extend the lead to 34-0.  

Andrew Rund took over at quarterback for the Hawks on the final possession of the third quarter.  Rund marched the Hawks down the field and the Hawks had the ball at the McKendree 20 to start the fourth quarter. 

4th Quarter

On the third play of the quarter, Andrew Rund scampered for a 12-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 34-7.  

Reece Metcalf connected with Jace Kennedy for his third touchdown of the game and extend the lead to 41-7.  

McKendree added another touchdown to bring the score to the score to 48-7

Theo Hopkins capped off an impressive night rushing for the Hawks as he scored from three yards out to bring the score to 48-14 with over five and a half minutes to play.  

This score was the final of the game and the Hawks fell 48-14.
