JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Quincy University football team escaped Jefferson City with a 14-13 road win over the Lincoln University Blue Tigers. Lincoln missed a field goal late in the fourth quarter and the Hawks held on for the one-point win.
Play by Play
First Quarter
The Blue Tigers got on the board quickly to begin the game. Lincoln used a nine play, 31-yard drive capped off by a 47-yard field goal. The drive was started by a quality kick off return to the Lincoln 39-yard line.
QU's opening drive lasted just three plays and the Hawks were forced to punt.
Lincoln scored again on its second possession, this time the Blue Tigers benefited from a 21-yard punt return to give them solid starting field position.
The Blue Tigers second scoring possession resulted in a second field goal to give Lincoln and early 6-0 lead with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter.
The Hawks second possession ate up nearly eight minutes of game clock and transitioned from the end of the first quarter until the beginning of the second quarter.
Second Quarter
QU's possession began on their own 25-yard line and the Hawks marched the ball nearly the length of the field. QU's possession endured several long third and fourth down conversions to keep the drive alive.
The Hawks elected to go for a touchdown on a fourth and goal at the Blue Tigers three-yard line.
Quarterback
Andrew Rund's pass fell incomplete and the Hawks turned the ball over on downs.
QU's defense continued its strong play and forced the Blue Tigers to punt on their possession following the Hawks failed fourth down conversion.
The Hawks persistence finally paid off on the next possession. QU took advantage of a 47-yard completion from Rund to
Gabriel Bryant to set up first and goal at the eight-yard line.
Two plays later,
Jordan Smith scored on a three-yard rushing touchdown to give QU a 7-6 lead with over two minutes to play in the half.
After the score, QU's defense made another stop and forced the Blue Tigers to punt.
Taking over with 1:29 to play in the half, the Hawks looked to run out the clock and head to the half leading 7-6. QU avoided disaster as
Theo Hopkins fumbled as the clock read zero. The Blue Tigers recovered the fumble but the clock had expired before their drive could start.
3rd Quarter
QU began the second half with the ball. Another big completion from Rund to
Shane Barrett for 75 yards put the Hawks at the Blue Tigers two-yard line.
Theo Hopkins ended the drive with a one-yard touchdown run to give the Hawks a 14-6 lead.
The Blue Tigers answered right back with a touchdown-scoring drive of their own. The Blue Tigers marched 73 yards in six plays to cut the lead to 14-13.
For the remainder of the game, fans saw a defensive struggle.
Both defenses forced punts on the next two possession. On QU's third possession of the quarter,
Andrew Rund was intercepted as the Hawks were driving. The interception gave the Blue Tigers the ball at their own 49-yard line.
A sideline interference penalty derailed the Blue Tigers possession following the interception and the Hawks took over with 1:12 to play in the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter
QU's next possession lasted 3:16 but again resulted in a punt.
Nathan Kewney pinned the Blue Tigers deep and forced Lincoln to start their possession at the eight-yard line.
The Blue Tigers final possession of the game lasted almost 10 minutes. Lincoln converted a fourth and four at their own 19-yard line by drawing the Hawks offsides.
One play later, Lincoln nearly turned the ball over on a fumble but the Blue Tigers were able to fall on the loose ball and keep the drive alive.
Facing fourth and four at the Hawks 36-yard line, Lincoln lined up for a 53-yard field goal. On the attempt,
Bryce Johnson blocked the kick and nearly gave the Hawks the ball back. However, the play was ruled dead on a false start penalty and the Blue Tigers would be forced to try and convert a 4th down and nine at the QU 41.
Lincoln converted with a 13-yard rush to the QU 28-yard line.
The Hawks defense held firm, forcing a pair of plays that resulted in negative yards. The Blue Tigers lined up for a second field goal attempt, trying to take the lead from the Hawks.
The 50-yard field goal attempt fell short and the Hawks took over at their own 33-yard line.
QU managed to run out the remaining 2:58 on the game clock and held on for the 14-13 win.
