QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team won its home opener against Wisconsin-Parkside 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Play by play
Both teams came out aggressively to start the game. The two teams combined for five shots in the first ten minutes of play. Quincy got an early scoring chance in the 12th minute when
Justin Armfield put a shot on the net. Armfield's shot was saved by Parkside keeper Juan Gonzalez.
The Rangers nearly took an early 1-0 in the 15th minute. Forward Leki Prpa put a shot towards the net, but the ball hit off the crossbar and was cleared by the Hawks.
Quincy got on the board in the 24th minute on a goal from
Aubrey Reis. Reis took a feed from
Kingsford Adjei near the box. He then maneuvered through a pair of defenders and struck a shot that found the bottom right corner of the net for the goal.
Parkside had a good chance to tie in the 30th minute when Prpa put another shot on goal, but the shot was saved by goalkeeper
Adam Whybrow.
The Hawks would find the net again in the 39th minute. Senior
Kyle Fraser sent a corner kick into the box where freshman
Hayden Tucker settled it. Tucker's shot from 3 yards out went in to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, Quincy was able to overcome aggresive play by Parkside. The Rangers were carded twice with one red card and also committed ten fouls.
Quincy had a chance in the 66th minute to extend their lead when
Kingsford Adjei made his way towards the net and put a shot on goal. Parkside's keeper made the save to keep the score at 2-0.
The Rangers made things interesting in the 75th minute. Junior Stevi Krecak scored on a shot from 18 yards out to bring the score to 2-1 with 15 minutes to play.
In the 84th minute, the Hawks put two shots on goal in a matter of seconds.
Kingsford Adjei once again sent a shot towards the net but was rejected. Fourteen seconds later,
Eduardo Vivanco tested Parkside's Gonzalez, but the keeper made the save.
QU's defense closed the game by not allowing a shot in the last 15 minutes of play.
