QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Purdue University Northwest on Thursday afternoon.
Play by play
The Hawks started well and had two opportunities in the first 20 minutes of play. In the 17th minute,
Kingsford Adjei sent a corner kick into the box when
Aubrey Reis headed the ball just wide.
Adjei created another scoring opportunity in the 20th minute. Adjei found his way into the box and fired a shot that was saved by Purdue Northwest goal keeper, Raul Garcia.Â
In the 28th minute,
Justin Armfield nearly put the Hawks on the board with a shot on goal, but it was stopped again by Garcia to keep the score 0-0.Â
Quincy continued to create scoring chances just before the half. In the 40th minute,
Eduardo Vivanco ripped a shot, but it was blocked by a PNW defender. Vivanco corralled the deflection and fired another shot that was saved on a diving play by Garcia.Â
The Hawks managed to put two more shots on goal before the half, but both teams were unable to find the back of the net.Â
It did not take long for Quincy to break through in the second half. In just forty-five seconds,
Kingsford Adjei put QU ahead. Freshman
Hayden Tucker played a ball into the box for Adjei. Adjei was one-on-one with the goalie and found the back of the net from ten yards out.Â
Purdue Northwest responded in the 65th minute. The Pride tied the game on a goal by Enrique Serna that was assisted by Isiah Nieves.Â
In the 74th minute, the Pride took the lead on a long goal by Justin Barragan. Quincy goal keeper
Adam Whybrow came out of the box to make a play on a ball, but Barrigan gained possession and flipped the ball over Whybrow and into the net from 20 yards out.Â
The Hawks fought to tie the game late by putting three late shots on goal. The best look came in the 82nd minute when
Cooper Reis controlled a cross and had an open look from inside 10 yards out. Reis' shot was struck well but caught by Garcia for the save. Quincy rattled off shots in the 86th and 87th minutes, but they were unable to cash in.
