Panthers And Hawks Split Day 1 of GLVC Weekend

QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks baseball team split a doubleheader against the Drury Panthers Friday (May 4).  The Hawks won game one of the doubleheader 6-2 before falling 3-2 in the second game. 

Play by Play:

Game 1
JC DeMuri led the Hawks to a 6-2 win in the first game of the doubleheader.  DeMuri went 3-4 with two home runs, three runs, and four RBIs.  

DeMuri got the Hawks on the scoreboard first, blasting a solo home run to right field in the second inning to give QU a 1-0 lead.  

The Panthers got a run back in the fifth and tied the game through five innings.  

In the bottom of the sixth, DeMuri blasted a three-run home run to right field to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead.  

Drury scored in the top of the eighth after a passed ball allowed the Panthers to cut the lead to 4-2.  

Michael Nielsen gave the Hawks a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run blast to right field.  

Cole Crawford worked a scoreless ninth and the Hawks won the first game of the doubleheader 6-2.  

Game 2
The Panthers threatened early in game two of the doubleheader.  Starter Nick Stroud was lifted from the game in the second inning with the bases loaded and no one out.  

Brandan Moriarty managed to work his way out of the jam to keep the score 0-0.  

The Panthers scored the first run of the game on a KK Daniel RBI single to left field to give Drury a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.  

Chandler Purcell delivered an RBI single with two outs in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1.  

Brandt Ollinger lined a two-RBI double down the left field line to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.  

In the bottom of the seventh, Michael Nielsen doubled to right field to lead off the inning.  

With one out, Matt Hilmes reached base as the Panther pitcher dropped a popup to put runners on the corners. 

The Hawks loaded the bases as Jake Viaene drew a walk.  

With one out, TJ Tamaccio narrowly missed a walk-off grand slam to left field.  His shot came up just short but was able to score Nielsen with a sac fly to cut the lead to 3-2. 

Brynn Martinez flew out as the Hawks stranded the tying run on second base, and the Hawks fell to the Panthers 3-2 in the nightcap.
