Hawks Season Ends in NCAA Midwest Regional

 QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy baseball team had its season come to an end on Sunday (May 20) in a loss to Ohio Dominican.  The Hawks fell to the Panthers 10-4 in the NCAA Midwest Regional.  

 
Play by Play:

 

Cody Birdsong got the Hawks off to a hot start with a solo home run to left field and QU took an early 1-0 lead.  

 

The Panthers tied the game in the bottom of the first with a solo home run through one inning of play.  

 

A second solo home run by the Panthers in the bottom of the second gave Ohio Dominican a 2-1 lead.  

 

The Panthers plated four runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-1 lead over QU.  

 

QU pulled within three in the top of the sixth inning as Troy Wehde and JC DeMuri each reached base with one out. 

 

Chandler Purcell drove home Wehde with an RBI single, cutting the lead to 6-2. 

 

A double by Matt Hilmes scored DeMuri and the Hawks trailed 6-3 after the top of the sixth. 

 

The Panthers answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead back to 7-3.  

 

Another Panthers run in the bottom of the seventh gave the Hawks a five-run deficit heading into the eighth inning.  

 

With two on and two out in the top of the eighth, Jake Viaene doubled to score Troy Wehde and the Hawks trailed 8-4.  

 

Ohio Dominican scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend the lead to 10-4. 

 

The Hawks were set down in order in the top of the ninth and their season came to an end.

The 2018 senior class became the winningest class in program history with 157 wins.  

 

The senior class played in four consecutive NCAA Midwest Regionals (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018), and three GLVC Tournament Championships (2015, 2017, 2018).  

 

The Hawks won back to back GLVC Tournament Championships in both 2017 and 2018 and advanced to the first NCAA Division II World Series in program history. 

 

Brynn Martinez became one of the most decorated Hawks in program history in his four seasons in a QU uniform.  

 

Martinez holds the career records for at-bats (857), hits (274), runs (223), starts (220), wins (157), post season starts (36) and post season games (36).  

 

Martinez also ranks in the top 10 in several other career and single-season categories. These include:

Martinez was named to the All-GLVC team four times in his career (1stTeam-2018, 2ndTeam-2017, 2016, 2015) and was an All-Region performer twice (1stTeam-2016, 2ndTeam-2018).  

 

Head coach Josh Rabe has led the Hawks to five NCAA Midwest Regionals and five GLVC Tournament Championship games in his eight seasons at QU.  He has won three GLVC tournament championships and led the Hawks to their first-ever NCAA Division II World Series.  

 

Rabe currently sits with 277 career wins and trails only Pat Atwell for most career wins (288).  Rabe's .629 winning percentage is the best in program history.
