QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks softball team won both games in their doubleheader against Missouri Baptist Thursday (Apr. 19). The Hawks won the first game of the doubleheader 8-3 and game two 4-1.
Play by Play:
Game 1
The Hawks offense was the story of the first game.
QU plated three runs in the top of the first inning to give Mac Kenzie Collier a 3-0 lead before stepping into the circle.
Remi Ferguson got the Hawks on the board with a single through the right side of the infield to score Courtney Kernich and Raigen Schwartz. Megan Sharpshair also scored on the play to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.
The Hawks added two more runs in the top of the third. Kylie Powers tripled to right field to score Ferguson and Kay Bettendorf, giving the Hawks a 5-0 lead.
Powers delivered again in the top of the fifth as she singled home Megan Sharpshair and Kay Bettendorf as the Hawks pushed their lead to 7-0.
QU added another run in the top of the sixth as Megan Sharpshair grounded into a fielders choice to score Raigen Schwartz.
Missouri Baptist cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Spartans plated three runs in the inning to cut the Hawks lead to 8-3.
The lead was too much for the Spartans to overcome and the Hawks took game one 8-3.
Game 2
The Hawks and Spartans were locked in a pitchers duel in the second game of the doubleheader.
Both the Spartans and Hawks scored a run in the second inning, bringing the score to 1-1 after two innings of play.
QU was able to find its stride in the top of the seventh inning.
Raigen Schwartz, Courtney Kernich, and Kay Bettendorf each reached base with one out.
The Hawks took the lead on a groundout by Megan Sharpshair.
Remi Ferguson and Kylie Powers each singled to score a pair of runs and give the Hawks a 4-1 lead.
The Spartans placed a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Hawks retired the next three Spartans to take a 4-1 win over Missouri Baptist.
