Softball Splits Doubleheader With #15 UIndy

QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks softball team split its doubleheader with #15 Indianapolis Sunday (Apr. 15).  The Hawks took game one 7-6 before falling to the Greyhounds 9-8 in game two.  

Play by Play:

Game 1
The Hawks struck first in the top of the third inning to break a scoreless tie with the Greyhounds.  

Courtney Kernich singled with one out to bring Kay Bettendorf to the plate. Bettendorf doubled to score Kernich and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.  

Megan Sharpshair followed with a walk to give the Hawks a pair of base runners.  Kylie Powers scored both runners with a double and gave the Hawks a 3-0 advantage.  

The Greyhounds scratched across a run in the bottom of the frame to cut the Hawks lead to 3-1.  

The Hawks plated a run in the top of the fourth on a one-out RBI single by Kernich.  

The Greyhounds tied the game at 4-4 thanks to a pair of home runs in the bottom of the fourth.  

The Greyhounds took the lead on a dropped pop up that scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Hawks trailed 6-4 heading into the sixth inning.  

Trailing by two in the top of the seventh, the Hawks started the inning with a pair of base runners.  QU loaded the bases after a single by Kylie Powers.  

Morgan Heckman followed with a walk to force home a run and the Hawks trailed 6-5.  

Geri Westerhoff delivered with an RBI single to center field to tie the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh.   The next two Hawks were retired and the Greyhounds came to bat in the bottom of the seventh.  

Indianapolis was set down in the bottom of the inning and the Hawks and Greyhounds headed to extra innings.  

Kernich led off the inning by reaching base on an error by the shortstop.  Kay Bettendorf followed with a single to put runners on first and second with no outs.  

Megan Sharpshair flew out but this allowed Kernich to move to third with one out.  

The Hawks executed a sac bunt to score Kernich and take a 7-6 lead.  

Mac Kenzie Collier set the Greyhounds down in order and the Hawks took a 7-6 win the first game of the doubleheader.  

Game 2
The Hawks offense continued to deliver, giving the Hawks a 7-0 lead through three innings.  

Morgan Heckman got the Hawks on the board first with a two-run home run to right center field in the top of the second inning.  

The Hawks scored five runs in the third inning to grab a 7-0 lead.  Kylie Powers drove a two-run double to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.  Dana Walsh launched a three-run home run to left field and gave the Hawks a seven-run cushion.  

QU added another run in the top of the fourth to lead the Greyhounds 8-0.  

The Greyhounds would not go quietly.  Indianapolis scored five runs on four hits and two Hawk errors in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 8-5 after four innings of play.  

Indianapolis tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with three more runs.  

The Hawks and Greyhounds would settle the second game of the doubleheader in extra innings.  

In the top of the ninth inning, the Hawks placed runners on second and third with just one out.  QU was unable to plate a run and the Greyhounds would come to bat.  

Indianapolis would score a run on a sacrifice fly and defeated the Hawks 9-8 in nine innings.
