QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks softball team split its doubleheader with the University of Wisconsin Parkside Saturday (Apr. 14). The Hawks took game one 3-1 before losing the second game of the day 4-3.
Play by Play:
Game 1
Courtney Kernich singled with one out in the top of the first. Kay Bettendorf followed with a single to put runners on first and second with one out.
Megan Sharpshair doubled to score Kernich and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Mac Kenzie Collier worked around a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the second to keep the Hawks ahead 1-0.
The Rangers tied the game in the bottom of the third inning at 1-1.
QU retook the lead right back in the top of the fourth.
Karli McLaughlin singled home Kylie Powers to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
Mac Kenzie Collier continued to keep the Rangers hitters off balance. The Rangers were held scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Hawks added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.
This was all the run support Collier would need as the Hawks won the opening game of the doubleheader 3-1 as Collier picked up her 8th win of the season.
Game 2
Kay Bettendorf launched her fifth home run of the season to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Rangers tied the game in the bottom of the first with a run of their own to knot the score at 1-1.
Wisconsin Parkside added another run in the bottom of the third inning. Three straight two-out hits gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead.
The Rangers added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 3-1.
QU cut the Rangers lead in half on a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Courtney Kernich singled home Katelyn Gratza to keep the Hawks alive.
The Hawks and Rangers went into extra innings in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Hawks had a runner at third base in the top of the eighth with two outs but were unable to take the lead.
Wisconsin Parkside walked off the Hawks in the bottom of the inning with a one-out single.
