Hawks Softball Drops Pair of Games To Missouri S&T

QUINCY, Ill. - The Missouri S&T Miners defeated the Quincy University Hawks softball team twice on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 25).  The Miners defeated the Hawks 2-0, 10-4 in Sunday's doubleheader.

Play by Play:

Game 1

Missouri S&T's starter Avery English held the Hawks to four hits in the Miners 2-0 win in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.  Hawks starter Mac Kenzie Collier was nearly just as good.  Despite allowing a first-inning run, Collier held the Miners in check.

After the top of the first, both starters tossed shutout innings until the top of the fifth.

A leadoff solo home run by Hannah Franceschini in the top of the fifth was the only other run surrendered by Collier.

The Miner's English held the Hawks offense at bay and picked up her 12th win of the season as Missouri S&T took game one of the doubleheader.

Game 2

The Miners struck first in game two with a solo home run in the top of the first.

QU answered right back as Kay Bettendorf blasted a two-run home run to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.

Missouri S&T retook the lead with a grand slam in the top of the second to take a 5-2 lead.

After a leadoff out, Bettendorf and Morgan Heckman singled to put runners on first and second with one out.

A fielders choice brought Remi Ferguson to the plate with two outs in the third.  Ferguson doubled to right center, scoring Heckman and cut the Miners lead to 5-3.

The Miners pushed across a run in the top of the fourth to push the lead to 6-3.

A second grand slam in the top of the sixth gave the Miners a 10-3 lead.

Katelyn Gratza hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh to trim the Miners lead to 10-4 but QU could bring the lead no closer.
