QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team dropped a pair of GLVC games Friday (Mar. 23) to Maryville University.  The Hawks fell 3-2 and 12-8 to the Saints.  

Play by Play:

Game 1
The Hawks struck first in the bottom of the second inning as Courtney Kernich tripled home Kay Bettendorf and Megan Sharpshair to put the Hawks up 2-0.  

Maryville was able to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning.  The Saints strung together five straight singles to take a 3-2 lead.  

The Hawks were unable to score the tying run in their final two at-bats and dropped the first game to Maryville 3-2.  

QU had just three hits in the first game against the Saints.  

Game 2
Maryville held the early advantage, scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning.  

QU responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning.  

The Saints plated a run in the top of the third to take a 4-3 lead.  

Maryville used a pair of home runs to pace its seven-run fourth inning and led the Hawks 11-3.  

The Saints scored another run in the fifth to extend their lead to 12-3.  

The Hawks offense would not go easily.  Courtney Kernich led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a pair of passed balls.  Kernich scored on an RBI single by Geri Westerhoff to cut the Saints lead to 12-4.  

The Hawks loaded the bases with two outs and would have to score at least another run to avoid the eight-run rule.  

Kylie Powers launched a deep home run over the center field wall for a grand slam.  This brought the Saints lead to 12-8 on Powers second home run of the day.  

The Hawks could bring the lead no closer and fell 12-8 in game two of the doubleheader.
