QUINCY, Ill. - The #23 Quincy University baseball team claimed a series win over the University of Southern Indiana Sunday (Mar. 18). The Hawks took the third game of the series 6-2, using a four-run seventh inning to secure the win.
Play by Play:
Drake McNamara put the Screaming Eagles on the board first with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fist. These were the only runs that starter Jimmy McDonald would allow in his six innings of work.
The Hawks would cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth. Jeff Hightower led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a Michael Nielsen groundout. Jake Viaene would bring home Hightower on another groundout to make the score 2-1.
Jimmy McDonald worked around a pair of baserunners with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to keep the score 2-1. McDonald again worked out of trouble in the fifth inning to keep the Hawks within striking distance.
The Hawks threatened in the top of the sixth as Cody Birdsong and Troy Wehde each reached base with a pair of singles. The next three Hawks were set down in order to end the QU scoring opportunity.
Matt Hilmes led off the top of the seventh with a double down the right-field line. After the next two Hawks were retired, Brynn Martinez reached after being hit by a pitch. Birdsong delivered with a two-out single to tie the game at 2-2. Troy Wehde reached on an error by the Screaming Eagles shortstop, allowing Brynn Martinez to score.
A passed ball allowed Birdsong and Wehde to advance to second and third. A throwing error by Southern Indiana allowed for Birdsong to score and give the Hawks a 4-2 lead. Michael Nielsen scored Wehde with an RBI single to put QU ahead 5-2.
The Hawks added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.
Branden Moriarty and Cole Crawford worked three innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits to secure the 6-2 win.
