Hawks Softball Splits With Drury

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team split its first two GLVC games of the season in a doubleheader against Drury University Saturday afternoon (Mar. 17).  The Hawks fell in game one 10-2 before responding in game two with a 4-0 win.  

Play by Play:

Game 1
The Panthers scored quickly in the first two innings. Drury plated three runs in the first two innings to take an early 3-0 lead.  The Hawks would answer in the top of the fourth.  

Remi Ferguson reached on a hit by pitch, advanced to second on wild pitch and was scored on a single by Megan Sharpshair. Sharpshair advanced to second on the throw.  After a groundout, Sharpshair advanced to third.  Kay Bettendorf drove home Sharpshair on a sac fly to cut the Panthers lead to 3-2.  

The Panthers immediately responded in the bottom of the fourth.  Drury sent 11 batters to the plate, recording four hits, scoring four runs to extend the lead to 7-2.  

Drury scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Hawks 10-2.  

Game 2
The Hawks responded early in game two after the 10-2 loss.  QU scored three runs in the top of the first and another run in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead over the Panthers.  

Ferguson led off the game with a single, advancing to third after an error by the right fielder.  Ferguson scored on a wild pitch to put the Hawks up 1-0.  The Hawks loaded the bases with one out and Raigen Schwartz singled to left to bring in two more runs for QU in the top of the first.  

The first two batters of the top of the second reached for QU and each advanced to scoring position after a passed ball. Jessica Poore scored Katelyn Gratza on an RBI groundout to put the Hawks up 4-0.  

This was all the cushion that starter Sara Demuth would need as she tossed a complete game shutout to give the Hawks their first GLVC win of the season.  Demuth scattered five hits and allowed just eight baserunners in her fifth win of the year.  Demuth also struck out five Panthers.
