Box Score 4 QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University softball went 2-2 on the final days of its trip to Clermont, Florida. The Hawks split with Monday's games, falling to St. Cloud State before another walk-off win over Southern Connecticut State. The Hawks also split on the final day of the trip. QU dropped its first game of the day 9-3 to Rollins University before an 8-0 win over Bridgeport University.
Monday Game 1
Remi Ferguson got the Hawks off to a white-hot start with a first-inning grand slam and the Hawks led the Huskies 4-0 after the first inning of play.
St. Cloud plated a run in the bottom of the third to trim the Hawks lead to 4-1.
The Hawks offense was held in check after the four-run top of the first. The Huskies scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Hawks lead to 4-3.
QU was the victim of a walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh. All five Huskies that came to the plate in the seventh reach base and St. Cloud scored the two runs it needed to defeat the Hawks 5-4.
Remi Ferguson, Morgan Heckman and Megan Sharpshair each finished with two hits in the first game of the day.
Monday Game 2
In the second game of the day, QU played the Southern Connecticut Owls.
QU scored two runs in the bottom of the first to give the Hawks an early 2-0 advantage as Southern Connecticut was set down quietly in its first two innings.
The Owls offense came through in the top of the third. The first three batters scored for the Owls as they led the Hawks 3-2 after three complete innings.
Neither team could add to the scoring and the Hawks would be forced to plate a run in the bottom of the seventh in order to extend the game.
Kay Bettendorf led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and Dana Walsh entered the game to pinch run for Bettendorf.
Raigen Schwartz followed up with a single to put two runners on for the Hawks. Senior Karli McLaughlin laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up.
After the next Hawks batter was retired, QU was down to its final out. Megan Sharpshair was down to her final strike before drawing a walk to load the bases.
Courtney Kernich tied the game with an RBI single and the bases were still loaded for Morgan Heckman.
Heckman delivered with a two-out single to give the Hawks a 4-3 win.
Game 1 Tuesday
On the final day of the Florida trip, the Hawks faced Rollins University in the first game of the day.
Rollins plated a pair of runs in the top of the second. The Hawks answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, capped by a two-RBI single by Katelyn Gratza.
Rollins grabbed control of the game with a four-run top of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.
Rollins scored a run in each remaining inning and the Hawks were unable to answer and dropped the game 9-3 to Rollins.
Gratza finished the game 2-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Game 2 Tuesday
Mac Kenzie Collier was spectacular in the final game of the road trip, tossing a complete game, one-hit shutout in the Hawks 8-0 win over Bridgeport. The Hawks also blasted a season-best four home runs as the QU offense scored in every inning.
Four players finished with multi-hit games in the 8-0 win.
Remi Ferguson drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single to score Courtney Kernich. Kay Bettendorf homered in the top of the second to put the Hawks up 2-0 and Ferguson also homered in the top of the third.
A pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning gave the Hawks a 5-0 lead as Collier continued to dominate.
Jordan Heinz and Kernich both homered in the top of the fifth to extend the Hawks lead to 7-0.
An RBI single by Megan Sharpshair scored Dana Walsh to give the Hawks an 8-0 lead.
Collier set down Bridgeport in the final inning as the Hawks run-ruled the Purple Knights.
QU sits at 10-8 as it enters GLVC play this weekend against Drury and Rockhurst.
