Box Score QUINCY, Ill. - Despite trailing by 16 with 5:50 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Quincy University women's basketball team battled back to defeat the University of Wisconsin Parkside 62-59 Thursday night (Feb. 8). QU outscored Wisconsin Parkside 24-5 over the final five minute to complete the comeback.
Both teams struggled to score in the opening quarter. Julia Ruzevich led the Hawks in the first quarter scoring five of the Hawks nine first-quarter points.
Wisconsin held an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter of play.
The Hawks scored the first four points of the second quarter to take a 13-11 lead.
The Rangers would take a 23-21 lead into the half.
Wisconsin Parkside outscored the Hawks 21-13 in the third quarter and held a 44-34 lead.
After a layup by Ali Bettencourt of Wisconsin Parkside pushed the lead to 54-38, The Hawks came alive.
Kate Ruzevich drew a foul after a strong take to the basket. She made the basket and made her free throw to cut the lead to 13.
Anika Webster drilled a deep three-pointer to bring the lead to 10.
Kate Ruzevich scored again to bring the lead to 9. Her sister Julia Ruzevich scored to cut the lead to seven.
A missed three-pointer gave the Hawks a chance to cut into the lead again.
The Hawks best three-point shooter, Jessie Rabas, drilled a three-pointer with 3:27 remaining to bring the lead to four.
A free-throw by Wisconsin Parkside pushed the lead back to five.
Webster hit a pair of free-throws to bring the lead to three and a layup by Kate Ruzevich scored again to cut the lead to one.
Another miss by the Rangers gave the Hawks a chance to take the lead. Rabas drained another three-pointer to give the Hawks a two-point lead with 1:26 remaining.
The Rangers responded with a three of their own to retake the lead 59-58.
Anika Webster went 4-4 from the foul line in the final 31 seconds to give the Hawks a three-point win.
Webster led the Hawks with 22 points, going 9-10 from the foul line. Kate Ruzevich provided a spark off the bench, scoring 11 points on 5-6 shooting and also grabbed four rebounds.
QU improved to 8-15 on the year and 4-10 in the GLVC.
