Quincy, IL. - The Quincy University softball team dropped a pair of games to Ohio Dominican University Sunday afternoon (Feb. 25).
The Hawks fell to the Panthers 8-0, 4-2 in the doubleheader.
A five-run fifth inning was the difference in the first game of the doubleheader.
Both teams went quietly in the first two innings of the game.
In the top of the third, the first three Panthers reached base to load the bases. The Hawks got a pair of out to keep the score tied at 0-0. Ohio Dominican rattled off three hits to score five runs in its half of the third.
The score remained tied at 5-0 through four innings of play.
Ohio Dominican plated a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 7-0.
The Hawks put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the fifth and looked to chip away at the Panther lead. Both runners were stranded in the bottom of the fifth.
Ohio Dominican scored another run in the top of the sixth to push the lead to 8-0.
The Hawks were unable to score in the bottom of the inning and were subject to the eight-run rule.
In the second game of the day, the Hawks fell to the Panthers 4-2.
Ohio Dominican added a run in its half of the first inning.
The Hawks took their first lead of the day in the top of the second inning. Kylie Powers led off with a single. Jessica Poore and Kay Bettendorf followed with a pair of doubles to make the score 2-1.
Powers again led off with a single in the top of the fourth. She advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third after ground ball out to the second baseman. The Hawks were unable to plate Powers and continued to hold a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers struck. Ohio Dominican scored three runs on a pair of hits to take a 4-2 lead.
The Hawks were set down in order in the sixth and the seventh and fell to the Panthers 4-2.
QU falls to 1-3 on the year. The Hawks are back in action tomorrow (Feb. 26) against Huntington College.
