QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team dropped a MIVA matchup to the McKendree Bearcats 3-1 Monday night (Feb. 19). The Bearcats defeated the Hawks 25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 25-21.
The Bearcats grabbed an early 11-3 lead in the first set against the Hawks. The Hawks were able to battle back and cut the Bearcats lead to 21-18 late in the set. The Bearcats were able to maintain their lead and won the opening set 25-20.
QU and McKendree were tied at 8-8 in the second set before the Hawks took control.
Anthony Winter led the way with several kills in the second set and pushed the Hawks lead to 19-15. McKendree trimmed the lead to 24-22 before a Brendon Estrada kill gave the Hawks a 25-22 set win.
The Hawks jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the third set. The Bearcats scored five of the next seven points to take an 8-7 lead. The Hawks and Bearcats battled back and forth before McKendree grabbed a 16-13 lead. This lead was enough for McKendree as the Bearcats won the third set 25-19.
QU needed a win in the fourth set to send the match to a deciding fifth set. The Hawks trailed 18-17 late in the fourth set. The Bearcats took seven of the sets final 11 points to take a 25-21 set win.
Anthony Winter led the Hawks with 16 kills and
Thane Fanfulik added 39 assists for QU.
The Hawks fall to 8-7, 0-5 in the MIVA. QU returns home on Friday (Feb. 23) against Ball State at 7 p.m. in Pepsi Arena.
