QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team was locked in a top 10 battle as they took on the #1 Delta State Statesmen Sunday (Feb. 18) in a doubleheader.
In game one, the Hawks and Statesmen sat tied at 0-0 through the first three and a half innings of play. Starter Riley Martin worked his way out of a few jams to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
The Hawks struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning. After the first two hitters were retired, senior first baseman Troy Wehde drew a walk to extend the inning. In his first at bat as a Hawk, junior catcher Jeff Hightower launched a towering home run over the left field wall to put the Hawks up 2-0.
Martin surrendered a run in the top half of the fifth but kept the Hawks in the lead 2-1.
The Hawks were retired in order in the bottom half of the fifth.
In the sixth, Delta State sent seven batters to the plate and scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead. The Statesmen scored another run in the top half of the seventh to push their lead to 5-2.
'Hightower struck again in the bottom of the seventh with his second home run of the game and brought the Hawks within two.
Delta State scored for the third straight inning and extended their lead to 6-3.
Hightower walked to lead off the ninth and Jake Viaene followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no one out. Two outs led to a run for the Hawks and QU was down to its final batter. Nolan Snyder extended the game with a single that brought home Viaene. Brynn Martinez flew out to center field and the Hawks fell in game one 6-5.
Hightower finished the first game 2-3 with a pair of home runs, 3 RBIs, and two runs. Nolan Snyder finished 2-4 with an RBI.
The Hawks again struck first in game two. Cody Birdsong hit his first home run as a Hawk in the bottom half of the first inning to put QU up 1-0.
The Statesmen scored four runs in the top of the second to take the lead 4-1. Chandler Purcell hit the Hawks fourth home run of the day to cut the Delta State lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second.
Delta State scored seven unanswered runs and defeated the Hawks 11-2 in the second game of the day.
Jeff Hightower reached base six times on the day for QU.
The Hawks fall to 0-2 on the year and travel to Indianapolis, Indiana to battled Notre Dame College and the University of Indianapolis next weekend.
