QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team fell to the University of Illinois-Springfield 74-63 Thursday (Feb. 15) evening.
The Hawks got the scoring started off quickly, taking an 11-2 lead after back-to-back three-pointers by Maddie Spagnola.
Both teams continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the first quarter, with the Hawks unable to extend the lead.
The Hawks held a 17-12 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes of action.
QU pushed their lead back to nine early in the second quarter with a jumper by Taylor Hickey.
With 4:39 left to play in the first half, Anika Webster nailed a jumper to give the Hawks a 26-18 lead.
UIS answered with an 11-0 run, taking a 29-26 lead with 2:31 left in the first half.
The Prairie Stars took a 33-30 lead into the half.
A pair of Michaela Gronewold jumpers and a Spagnola layup cut the deficit to just three with 7:40 left in the third quarter.
The Prairie Stars used a 6-0 run and nearly four scoreless minutes by the Hawks to take a 49-39 lead into the final quarter.
Anika Webster came alive in the final 10 minutes of action, scoring 13 points in the quarter.
Webster tied the game with a three-point play with six minutes left in the game and brought the score to 51-51. The Hawks took a 53-51 lead one minute later after a layup by Aleksandra Petrovic.
The Hawks and Prairie Stars traded baskets again, with three lead changes in the final five minutes.
UIS grabbed a 61-60 lead with 2:14 remaining in the game.
The Prairie Stars extended the lead to as many as seven with 34 seconds to play. Webster drained a three-pointer to cut the lead to four with 21 seconds remaining.
UIS went 5-6 from the foul stripe in the final 21 seconds to secure the nine-point win.
Webster led QU with 22 points. Petrovic added a career-high 10 points, and Spagnola finished with 9 points.
The Hawks fall to 8-17, 4-12 in the GLVC. The Hawks have a week off before they travel to UMSL (Feb. 22) to take on the Tritons at 5:30 p.m.
