QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team fell in a GLVC matchup with the Truman State Bulldogs Saturday afternoon (Feb. 10). The Hawks lost the game 73-63.
A 20 point first quarter proved to be the difference for the Bulldogs as their offensive output quickly established a lead. Through the first seven minutes of the first quarter, the Bulldogs led 12-4 over the Hawks.
The Bulldogs extended this lead to 18-7 with 49 seconds to go in the opening quarter. A Taylor Hickey three-pointer cut the lead to eight with 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
A layup by the Bulldogs just before the buzzer sounded pushed the lead back to 10 after the first ten minutes of action.
The offensive for Truman State continued in the second quarter as the Bulldogs stretched their lead to as many as 19 with 4:12 to play in the half.
The Hawks were able to trim the lead to 12, capped by an Alesandra Petrovic three-pointer with 38 seconds to play in the half.
QU scored on its first two possessions of the second half to trim the lead to seven. Back and forth action between both teams saw the Bulldogs lead set at nine at the start of the fourth quarter.
The Hawks cut the lead to five with 4:27 to play in the game after a layup by Anika Webster. The Hawks came up empty on their next three possessions before a 6-0 run by the Bulldogs pushed the lead back to 11.
A three-pointer by Maddie Spagnola with 37 seconds remaining brought the Hawks within striking distance as the Bulldogs lead was just seven. The Bulldogs hit three of four free-throws down the stretch to secure the 10 point win.
Jessica Merino led the Hawks with 16 points, knocking down four three-pointers. Anika Webster added 13 points for the Hawks.
