Hawks Hold Off Hannibal-LaGrange for 72-70 Win

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's basketball team held off a tough Hannibal-LaGrange team for a 72-70 win Saturday afternoon (Dec. 8).  The Hawks front court of Ryan Briscoe, Jah-Kobe Womack, and Demetrius Houston combined for 46 of the Hawks 72 points.  

Play by Play

1st Half

The Hawks began the game by outscoring the Trojans 19-4 behind the Briscoe, Womack, and Houston in the first six minutes of play.  

QU continued its hot start, extending its lead to 18 points midway through the opening half. This would be the largest lead of the game for the Hawks.  

The Trojans began to chip away at the Hawks lead in the ensuing minutes.  Hannibal-LaGrange scored 10 unanswered points to cut the Hawks lead to 31-23.  

Hannibal-LaGrange's run brought QU's lead to 33-29 with 5:01 to play in the first half.  The 16-2 run erased the Hawks hot start.  

A three-pointer by Ryan Briscoe pushed the Hawks lead back to seven with 4:34 remaining in the opening 20 minutes.  

The Trojans continued to battle, trimming the Hawks lead to just two with two and a half minutes to play in the half.  

QU made adjustments over the final two minutes as the Hawks went 5-6 from the foul line and a Trevor Meny bucket extend the lead to 43-34 at the half.  

2nd Half

The Hawks held a 10 point lead with just under 16 minutes remaining in the game.  

A 13-2 run by Hannibal-LaGrange over the next four minutes gave the Trojans the lead with 12:14 to play in the game.  

A basket and a free throw by Marcus Hinton allowed for the Hawks to retake the lead on the following possession.  

The game's leading scorer, Brady Smith, tied the game at 53 midway through the second half.  Smith finished 29 points and 11 rebounds in the two point loss.  

QU took control with a 5-0 run and the Hawks held a 58-53 lead.  

Hannibal-LaGrange responded with a 6-0 run of their own to retake a one point lead.  

A three-pointer by Jah-Kobe Womack and a layup by Aziz Fadika gave the Hawks a 63-59 with 5:39 to play.  

The Hawks and Trojans traded the lead until the the 2:29 mark.  Marcus Hinton gave the Hawks a 69-68 lead on a layup.  A steal by Ryan Briscoe led to a fast break layup as the Hawks guard gave QU a 71-68 lead.  

The Trojans cut the lead to 71-70 on a layup.  Marcus Hinton's three-pointer was off the mark on the Hawks ensuing possession.  The Trojans looked to take the lead but solid defense by the Hawks forced a difficult shot attempt for Hannibal-LaGrange.  Demetrius Houston corralled the miss and went to the foul line following a Trojans foul.  

Houston made the first foul shot but was off the mark on the second.  

Brady Smith's three-point attempt was no good at the buzzer and the Hawks held on for a the 72-70 win.
