QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team was handed a 71-67 loss after a strong second half by the Culver-Stockton Wildcats. QU lost the turnover battle 18-8 which allowed the Wildcats to sneak past for the victory.
Play by Play
1st Quarter
Quincy gained the early advantage behind three point shooting.
Ella Gobald and
Jessica Merino knocked in shots from deep to put the Hawks ahead 10-3 in the early going.
Alexa Low made a jump shot with a minute left in the quarter to give QU a 14-9 lead heading into the second quarter.
2nd Quarter
The Hawks continued to score in the next quarter. After a free throw by Culver made the score 16-13, Quincy went on a run. QU scored the next ten points with seven coming from
Maddie Spagnola. Quincy held a 26-13 lead with three minutes to play in the first half.
Culver-Stockton outscored Quincy 11-6 in the remaining three minutes to bring the deficit within ten points. The Hawks led 32-24 going into the break.
3rd Quarter
Both teams came out of the break with made baskets to make the score 36-28. With six minutes left,
Aleksandra Petrovic made a jumper to keep QU in front 40-30.
The Wildcats went on a 8-3 run to cut the lead to just five. Quincy responded by scoring the next two baskets and they still remained ahead 46-38.
Culver once again answered QU with another run of six straight points to make it a 46-44 game. The quarter would end with Quincy leading 49-46.
4th Quarter
Quincy started of the final quarter on the wrong foot. QU had two turnovers and a missed lay up to open the fourth.
Culver-Stockton took advantage by scoring six in-a-row and regained the lead for the first time since the first quarter.
The Hawks tied the game 52-52 after a three-pointer by
Taylor Hickey with six minutes to play. The Wildcats netted the next seven of ten points to move in front 59-55.
With two minutes left,
Alexa Low made a jumper to bring QU withing three 62-59.
Maddie Spagnola brought the deficit to just two with a pair of made free throws with 1:18 remaining.
Culver scored ten seconds later to make it a four point game. Down the stretch, with Quincy needing to foul to have a chance, C-SC went 6-6 on their last six free throw attempts. The Hawks were unable to come back and fell 71-67.
