QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's basketball team fell to Grand Valley State 77-73 Sunday in the finale of the Subway Holiday Classic. Grand Valley outscored the Hawks 50-43 in the second half to claim the tournament championship.
Play by Play
1st Half
The Hawks held the Laker offense in check through the first four minutes of the first half.
The Hawks trailed Grand Valley 8-7 before QU used a 9-0 run to take a 16-8 lead with 12:14 to play in the opening half.
Grand Valley ended the run on a layup to bring the score to 16-10. QU scored the next four points to extend the lead to 10 midway through the half.
The Hawks led 22-14 with just over five minutes to play in the half. Jake Van Tubbergen knocked down a three-pointer to bring the score to 22-17. A pair of free throws for Grand Valley cut the lead to three.
Grand Valley held a 27-25 with under two minutes to play.
Demetrius Houston drilled a three-pointer to give the Hawks the lead back. Following a defensive stop,
Aziz Fadika scored as the half ended to give QU a 30-27 lead at the half.
2nd Half
Grand Valley opened the second half on a 7-0 run to take a four point lead.
QU responded by tying the game on a three-pointer by
Ryan Briscoe with 15:42 remaining.
The score read 43-41 with 13:02 to play. Grand Valley used another 7-0 run to take a 50-41 lead over the next minute and fifteen seconds.
The Lakers pushed their lead to as large as 15 with 5:31 remaining in the game. The Hawks continued to battle despite the deficit.
With 1:44 to play the Lakers held a 13 point lead.
Jah-Kobe Womack and
Marcus Hinton drilled a pair of three-pointers to cut the lead to seven.
A turnover followed by a Womack layup made the lead five with 34 seconds to play.
The Lakers missed a foul shot on the front end of a one and one that gave the Hawks the ball back.
Aziz Fadika scored a layup to make the score 73-71.
Grand Valley made a pair of free throws to push the lead back to five.
Marcus Hinton scored another layup to bring the lead back to three.
The Hawks could bring the lead no closer and fell to Grand Valley 77-73.
With the win, Grand Valley was the Subway Holiday Classic Tournament champion.
