COLUMBUS, Oh. – The Quincy University women's basketball team opened up their season in the Crossover Challenge held in Columbus, Ohio today (Nov. 9). Sophomore guard
Maddie Spagnola made a three-pointer with 15 seconds left to put the Hawks within two, but QU fell 64-61.
Play by Play
1st Quarter
The Hawks made a trio of three-pointers to open the game and went ahead 9-4.
Taylor Hickey,
Maddie Spagnola, and
Aleksandra Petrovic connected from deep to give QU the early lead.
Ohio Dominican answered by taking the lead 13-11 after a seven-point run.
Ella Gobald quickly tied the score with a made jump shot.
The Panthers ended the quarter on a 8-0 run and extended the lead to 21-13.
2nd Quarter
ODU opened the quarter with a three to push the lead to 11 points.
Taylor Hickey got a steal and found Spagnola for a fastbreak lay-up to gain some momentum back.
The lay-up was the start of a ten-point run by Quincy. The Hawks pulled within one after another fastbreak lay-up by Spagnola made the score 24-23 favoring Ohio Dominican.
Both teams exchanged three-pointers on the next two possessions.
Jessica Merino netted her first shot from long distance to make the score 27-26.
The Panthers made a pair of free throws with 30 seconds left to go ahead 29-26.
Ella Gobald gave the Hawks momentum going into halftime with a made three-pointer to tie the score 29-29.
3rd Quarter
Ohio Dominican opened the second half by scoring six straight points.
Taylor Hickey conected from beyond the arc, and
Maddie Spagnola got to the bucket with a lay-up to put the Hawks back within one 35-34.
At the end of the third quarter, ODU held a four-point lead 47-43.
4th Quarter
The Panthers extended their lead to eight points after a three-pointer and a lay-up.
QU answered the threat with back-to-back buckets to make it a 2-point game 51-49.
The Hawks gained the lead with just under five minutes left to play. Spagnola connected on a three to give Quincy the edge 56-55.
ODU scored the next five points to go back in front 60-56. With 1:15 left in the fourth quarter, the Panthers made a three to push the score to 63-58.
Maddie Spagnola tried to put QU in position to win by making a deep three with 15 seconds left. The score was 63-61 ODU.
Quincy fouled on the inbound play. The Panthers made one of the two attempts giving the Hawks a chance to draw up one last play with six seconds left.
Taylor Hickey had her three-point attempt blocked by ODU's Angela Troyer. Spagnola, having a knack for the ball, corralled the rebound and created a scoring chance at the buzzer. Her desperation shot missed the mark, and the Hawks fell to 0-1.
