QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team opened up conference play with a 58-49 win over William Jewell on Thursday evening (Nov. 29). It was the Hawks' third win in a row after an 0-4 start.
Play by play
1st Quarter
In the first half, both teams struggled from the floor. Neither team shot above 25% from the field, but the Hawks battled through.
William Jewell opened the game with a 3-pointer, but
Grace Schraufnagel answered with a made basket.
A minute and a half later,
Maddie Spagnola connected from deep to give QU a 5-3 lead. The Cardinals netted another long distance shot to move back in front 6-5.
After a made basket by the Cardinals made the score 8-5, Spagnola once again drained a three to tie the game at 8-8.
Quincy outscored Jewell 8-4 in the remainder of the first quarter. The Hawks led 16-12 going into the second.
2nd Quarter
Both teams went cold in quarter number two. Quincy and William Jewell each scored just six points.
Lexi Doyle,
Grace Schraufnagel, and
Maddie Spagnola collected baskets in the defensive second quarter. QU went into the break leading 22-18.
3rd Quarter
The Hawks were more efficient in the second half and it started in the third quarter.
Six different Hawks scored in the third quarter including nine points from
Michaela Gronewold. Gronewold knocked down three shots from beyond the arc to give Quincy a 42-30 lead going into the final quarter.
4th Quarter
Gronewold started off the fourth with a made lay up to put the Hawks ahead by 14.
The Cardinals tried to cut into the lead. With two minutes left in the game, William Jewell made a 3-pointer to bring the Cardinals within eight as the score was 49-41.
Quincy was able to make enough free throws down the stretch to keep Jewell at bay. The Hawks held tough for their third win in a row with a 58-49 victory.
