LIBERTY, MO. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team dropped a conference matchup to William Jewell on Friday evening (Oct. 5). The Hawks went five sets with the Cardinals before falling 29-31, 25-15, 14-25, 25-22, 11-15.
Play by Play
Set 1
It took the Cardinals 31 points to take the first set. Both teams were gridlocked early after an attack error tied the game at 4-4.
The lead never surpassed four points in the set. The Cardinals held a 17-13 lead before Quincy made a run to take the lead. The Hawks scored five straight points to move ahead 18-17.
Quincy trailed late in the set 23-22, but two straight points put them in control. A kill by
Baylie Stephens and a ball handling error on WJC gave QU the one-point edge.
William Jewell scored the next two points to go ahead 24-23 and put pressure back on the Hawks.
The Hawks held a lead at 27-26 and 28-27, but they were unable seal the win. William Jewell won the first set 31-29
Set 2
Quincy never trailed in the second set. William Jewell challenged early by forcing a 2-2 tie and a 3-3 tie. The Hawks rattled off four straight to go ahead 7-3 and never looked back.
The Hawks ended the game by scoring the final four points to win 25-15.
Set 3
The roles were reversed in set number three. The Cardinals took it to QU with a four point run to go ahead 7-4.
Quincy was unable to get anything going as they never made a run greater than two points. William Jewell led for the remainder of the set after going up 7-4. The Cardinals went up 2-1 with a 25-14 set win.
Set 4
The Hawks looked to stay alive in the fourth set. An early four point run which included a kill by
Kaeley Mueller allowed the Hawks to move ahead 7-3.
With Quincy leading 13-9, the Cardinals made a five point run to gain the lead 14-13.
QU made another run to go ahead 22-17. The four point burst was capped off with a service ace by
Taylor McMonagle.
William Jewell pressed late by cutting the Quincy lead to 22-21. The Hawks held on for the 25-22 win to force a fifth set.
Set 5
The two teams were notched 4-4 after a kill by
Sarah Brown.
The difference came when William Jewell scored the next seven points to go ahead 11-4.
Quincy tried to climb back into it after a kill from McMonagle made the score 14-10.
The Cardinals went on to win the set 15-11 and took the game 3-2.
