QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University football team dropped its GLVC matchup to the #20 University of Indianapolis Saturday (Oct. 13) 35-7. The Greyhounds scored 28 unanswered points to secure the win.
In the loss, senior linebacker
Cody Leonard broke the schools career solo tackles record. Leonard now has 189 solo tackles in his career. Cliff Fruge previously held the record with 187.
Play by Play
First Quarter
The Hawks elected to receive the opening kick off to begin the game. QU went three and out on the opening possession.
Indianapolis mounted a methodical opening drive to take an early 7-0 lead. The Greyhounds used a nine play, 68-yard drive capped by a two-yard touchdown pass from Jake Purichia to Danny Annee.
The Hawks next possession again resulted in a punt.
Indianapolis took over on their own 23-yard line to begin their second possession.
The Greyhounds leading rusher, Al McKeller, took a hand off and was initially held up by the Hawks defense. McKeller broke a tackle and tried to reverse his field. While reversing fields, McKeller was met by
Kris Sutton who forced a fumble.
Clayton Cole fell on the loose ball and the Hawks took over at the Greyhounds 19-yard line.
Andrew Rund led the Hawks 19 yards, including his one-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7 with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter.
The Greyhounds next possession began in the first quarter and used nearly five minutes of game clock.
2nd Quarter
On the Greyhounds possession, Jake Purichia completed a pass to Malik Higgins. As Higgins was attempting to go into the end zone for another Greyhounds touchdown, he was stripped and the ball went through the end zone for a touch back.
The Hawks looked to capitalize and take the lead over the Greyhounds. QU took the ball to their own 47-yard line but were forced to punt.
Nathan Kewney pinned the Greyhounds deep at their own 17-yard line. On the return Daveon Bell was tackled for a negative six-yard return and the Greyhounds took over at their own 11.
Indianapolis mounted a long scoring drive to take a 14-7 lead, using seven minutes and twelve seconds of game clock. A two-yard touchdown run by Al McKeller gave the Greyhounds their seven point lead.
The Hawks escaped disaster on their next possession. Following three runs by the Hawks, Indianapolis took a time out to try for one final possession of the first half.
On
Nathan Kewney's punt a Greyhounds defender blocked the kick and returned the blocked punt 32 yards for a touchdown. However a leaping penalty was called and nullified the touchdown.
QU ran out the remaining 37 seconds of the first half and went into the locker room down 14-7.
3rd Quarter
QU's defense stepped up in a big way by forcing a Greyhounds punt on the first series of the second half.
The Hawks were unable to take advantage of the punt and gave the ball back to the Greyhounds on a punt of their own.
Another methodical drive by Greyhounds led to another touchdown, this time on a 28-yard strike from Purichia to Malik Higgins.
QU's offense couldn't find the rhythm in the third quarter and punted for a second time in the quarter.
A 32-yard touchdown pass on the Indianapolis ensuing possession gave the Greyhounds a 28-7 lead.
4th Quarter
The Hawks looked to make a comeback in the fourth quarter, trailing by three scores. QU pushed the ball into Greyhounds territory.
QU turned the ball over on downs as
Theo Hopkins was stopped on a fourth and two to give the ball back to the Greyhounds.
Indianapolis added to its lead with another scoring drive to take a 35-7 lead.
After punts by both teams, the Hawks had one final possession in effort to cut into the Greyhounds lead.
With two seconds to play,
Andrew Rund's pass fell incomplete in the end zone and the Hawks fell to the Greyhounds 35-7.
