QUINCY, Ill. – A strong fourth quarter gave the Quincy University women's basketball team the edge in its GLVC matchup against Maryville. The Hawks defeated the Saints 67-58 Saturday afternoon (Jan 6).
The Hawks got started quickly, grabbing a 4-0 lead in the first minute of the game.
Maryville quickly responded by going on a 6-0 run to take the lead with 6:57 to play in the first quarter.
Jessie Rabas hit her first three-pointer of the game to put the Hawks back on top 7-6 with 6:43 remaining in the opening quarter.
Maryville held a 12-11 lead with 2:30 to play in the first quarter. The Hawks scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 15-12 lead.
Maddie Spagnola got the Hawks off to a good start in the second quarter, hitting a three-pointer in the Hawks opening possession.
Another three-pointer by Michaela Gronewold put the Hawks up 21-12 with 7:17 to play in the half.
The Hawks held a 27-20 lead with 3:19 remaining in the first half before the Saints scored the final nine points to grab a 29-27 lead heading into the half.
Anika Webster tied the game on the Hawks first possession but the Saints quickly responded with a three-pointer by Stephanie Sherwood.
Sherwood finished with a career-high 25 points for Maryville.
The Saints led by as many as nine with 5:51 to play in the third quarter.
The Hawks battled back to cut the lead to just one before the start of the fourth quarter.
QU scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to take a 50-45 lead with 8:17 to play.
Maryville would not go easy and retook the lead 55-53 at the 5:23 mark in the final quarter.
Rabas, who'd been held scoreless since the first quarter, came alive in the final five minutes of the game.
The junior guard knocked down back to back three-pointers to put the Hawks up 59-55 with 4:24 to play.
Including Rabas' three-pointers, the Hawks outscored the Saints 14-3 in the final 5:02 of the contest.
QU picked up its first GLVC win of the season, improving to 5-9, 1-4 in the GLVC.
Anika Webster led the Hawks with 14 points.
Rabas finished with 12 points, making 3-5 three-pointers. Rabas is currently shooting over 52% from behind the arc.
The Hawks continue their home stand next Saturday at 1 p.m. against the University of Illinois Springfield.
