QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team lost a GLVC matchup to Lewis University 83-67 Saturday afternoon (Jan. 27).
The Flyers took control early on. Lewis used a 10-0 run early in the first quarter to take a 15-2 lead. Both teams continued to trade baskets, with the Flyers gaining a 28-14 lead with 2:46 left in the first.
Jessica Merino nailed a 3-pointer at the end of the first to cut the lead to 28-19. Alexa Low kept QU in the game in the first quarter, scoring 10 of the Hawks 19 points.
The Hawks continued to fight in the second quarter, not allowing the Flyers extend their lead. Julia Ruzevich provided a spark, with six points in the quarter. Anika Webster hit two free throws with 1:11 remaining to cut the lead to seven before the Flyers hit a jumper before the end of the half.
The Flyers led the Hawks 44-35 at the end of the first half.
Lewis scored the first points of the second half to push the lead to 46-35. The Hawks continued to fight back, pulling within six points after a free throw by Webster with 5:38 left in the third quarter.
The Flyers led 59-51 at the end of the third.
Lewis scored the first five points of the fourth quarter, pushing their lead to 13. The Hawks were able to cut the lead to seven after Webster knocked down a pair of free throws with 3:14 remaining in the game.
Lewis would not allow the Hawks to bring the lead any closer, holding on for an 83-67 win.
Alexa Low led the Hawks with 16 points on 8-16 shooting. Ruzevich and Webster added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
QU fell to 7-13, 3-8 in GLVC play.
The Hawks hit the road Thursday, February 1st, against the Bellarmine Knights at 5:30 p.m.
