QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team lost a GLVC matchup to the University of Missouri-St. Louis 80-60 Saturday afternoon (Jan. 20).
The Tritons took control early on. UMSL used an 11-0 run midway through the first quarter to take a 23-6 lead. Maddie Spagnola hit a 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter to cut the deficit to 14 points.
Spagnola provided a spark off the bench, scoring the first six points of the second quarter for the Hawks. With 7:30 left to play in the first half, Anika Webster nailed a 3-pointer to pull within six, making the score 25-19.
The Tritons regained control of the game thanks to an eight-point second quarter by Quincy native, Jordan Fletcher.
The Tritons led the Hawks 40-30 at the end of the first half.
UMSL scored the first bucket of the second half to push the lead to 42-30. The Hawks continued to fight back, pulling within seven points after a layup by Webster with 5:35 left in the third quarter.
UMSL caught fire, going on a 14-2 run to end the third quarter, bringing the score to 61-42.
The Hawks and Tritons traded baskets early in the fourth quarter, as the Hawks were able to pull within 14 points after Alexa Low nailed a jumper with 7:56 to play.
UMSL would not allow the Hawks to bring the lead any closer, holding on for an 80-60 win.
Julia Ruzevich led the Hawks with 17 points on 8-11 shooting. Webster and Spagnola added 16 and 15 points, respectively.
QU fell to 6-12, 2-7 in GLVC play.
The Hawks return home Thursday, January 25th, against the Missouri S&T Miners at 5:00 p.m.
