QUINCY, Ill. - Redshirt freshman
Tanner Stuckman finished with a career-high 17 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Hawks to a 74-61 win over the UMSL Tritons Saturday afternoon (Jan. 20).
The Hawks were forced to play from behind in the early goings of the first half, falling behind 13-7 with 15:10 to play.
A nine-point Hawks run put QU ahead 16-13.
After a 5-0 run by the Tritons,
Demetrius Houston tied the game at 18-18 with 10:50 to play.
The Hawks scored the next seven points to extend their lead to 25-18 with 8:01 remaining in the first half.
With the lead trimmed to five with 6:12 to play in the opening half, QU scored the next nine points to push the lead to 14.
A pair of baskets by the Tritons cut the lead to nine by the end of the first half.
QU held a 34-25 lead heading into the locker room after the first 20 minutes of play.
Stuckman got the Hawks off to a hot start in the second half, scoring five points in the first minute and forty seconds of the second half.
The Hawks continued their strong play for most of the second half, extending the lead to as many as 20 with 3:50 to play in the second half.
The Tritons would not go quietly, forcing several Hawks turnovers in the final minutes of the game.
UMSL cut the lead to 11 with 1:01 to play. After a
Robby Dosier layup, the Tritons answered with a layup of their own to keep the lead at 11.
A dunk by
Marcus Hinton put the game away with 27 seconds to play.
The Hawks held on for the 13 point win and picked up their second consecutive GLVC victory.
Houston and Stuckman both finished with 17 points and Hinton added 15 in the win.
QU improved to 6-12, 2-7 in the GLVC.
The Hawks take on the Missouri S&T Miners Thursday, January 25th, at 7:30 in Pepsi Arena for the next matchup.
