QUINCY, Ill. -
Marcus Hinton's layup with 1.4 seconds remaining gave the Quincy University men's basketball team its first conference win of the season. The Hawks defeated the McKendree Bearcats 69-67 Thursday night (Jan. 18).
The Hawks were forced to play from behind in the early part of the first half.
McKendree began the game on an 11-0 run in the first three minutes and forty seconds of the first half.
QU trailed by as many as 13 with 12:57 to play in the opening 20 minutes.
The Hawks deficit sat at 11 at the 9:12 mark in the first half. An 11-0 run by QU erased the deficit as
Paulo Camilo tied the game.
The Hawks and Bearcats sat tied at 23 with 5:24 to play.
A three-pointer by junior guard
Demetrius Houston gave the Hawks their first lead of the game with 4:48 remaining in the first half.
The Hawks extended their lead to five after a pair of free throws with 2:26 to play.
McKendree regained the lead with 51 seconds remaining but the Hawks took the lead back after a layup by De'Andre Alexander.
QU held a 31-30 lead after the first 20 minutes of action.
The see-saw battled continued throughout the second half as McKendree grabbed a 38-35 lead at the 17:41 mark.
A pair of three-pointers by Houston and
Bobby Frasco allowed the Hawks to recapture the lead with 16:50 remaining.
The Hawks led by one with 6:06 remaining in the contest.
The Bearcats made five free-throws during a 30-second stretch to grab a four-point lead.
Ryan Briscoe cut the lead to one after a three-pointer on the Hawks next possession.
QU trailed by two with 2:04 left to play.
Marcus Hinton knocked down a pair of free-throws to tie the game at 67-67 with 1:27 remaining.
The Hawks got a pair of defensive stops of consecutive McKendree possessions to keep the score knotted at 67.
Ryan Briscoe took the ball at the top of the three-point line with 5 seconds to play and found Hinton rolling to the basket after his screen freed up Briscoe.
The Bearcats last-second tip in was off the mark and the Hawks held on for the two-point win.

Demetrius Houston each scored 14 points for the Hawks.
Marsalis Johnson and
Marcus Hinton finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Hawks improved to 5-12, 1-7 in the GLVC. QU takes on the Tritons of UMSL Saturday, January 20th, at 3:15 p.m. in Pepsi Arena.
