QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team got the season started off with a 3-1 win over the Culver-Stockton Wildcats Saturday (Jan. 13) evening.
The Hawks played a near perfect first set, scoring 12 kills on 18 attacks and had just one attack error. The Hawks also took advantage of eight attack errors by the Wildcats in the first set. The Hawks took the opening set 25-17.
The Wildcats responded with a strong second set of their own, scoring 12 kills on 27 attacked and committed just two attack errors. The Hawks, however, had ten kills on 30 attacks and had 10 attack errors. The Wildcats won the second set 25-20.
In his first match as head coach,
Gavin Mueller got the Hawks back on track in the third set. With the scored tied at 7-7, the Hawks went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-7 lead. QU remained in control and won the third set 25-14.
The Hawks scored the first four points of the fourth set and held a 6-1 lead through the first seven points of the fourth set. Trailing 12-7, Culver-Stockton cut the lead to 12-11 and would eventually tie the score at 13-13.
QU scored seven of the next nine points to take a 19-15 lead. The Hawks held on for a comfortable 25-21 set win.
The Hawks were led by
Anthony Winter, who finished with 16 kills in the match.
Adam Rogan and
Thane Fanfulik combined for 35 assists in the win.
Gavin Mueller picked up his first win as the Hawks head coach.
QU is back in action Friday (Jan. 19) against Park University.
