QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to Lewis University Saturday afternoon (Sept. 30). Despite winning the first set QU could not keep the momentum going, dropping the next three.
The Hawks and Flyers came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, matching each other point for point early on. QU managed to take the lead to 20-19 and never looked back, winning 25-21.
The Hawks won the first point of the second set, but that proved to be their only lead. Both teams continued to share points until the Flyers rallied off six straight points to extend their lead to 19-13. After a few errors by the Flyers, the Hawks battled back with two kills by Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, MI/ Fenton) and Bekah Raebel (Waterford, WI/ Waterford Union), cutting the lead to 24-18. Caroline Stefanon closed out the set with a kill on the next point.
The Flyers evened the match at 1-1 going into intermission.
After the third set started 5-5, Lewis took control and never looked back. Never leading by losing the lead, the Flyers dominated the rest of the set and went on to win 25-16.
In the fourth set, with the score reading 11-8 in favor of the Flyers, Lewis used a five-point run to take control of the match at 16-8. The Hawks continued to fight back, cutting the lead to 22-19. Then, the Flyers rattled off three straight kills to win the set 25-19, and take the match.
Raebel lead the Hawks with 19 kills and Sara Rathbun (Bristol, WI / Westosha Central) and Miranda Rodriguez (Joliet, IL/ Joliet Catholic) each added 17 assists.
The Hawks fall to 2-13 on the season and 1-6 in the GLVC.
The Hawks take on Missouri S&T on Tuesday (Oct. 3) at 7 p.m. in Rolla, Missouri.
