QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team picked up its third win of the season with a dramatic five set victory over the Missouri S&T Miners. The Hawks were able to respond after losing the first and the third set to win the second, fourth and fifth.
In the first set, the Hawks and the Miners looked evenly matched. Missouri S&T used a pair of four point runs to take control midway through the opening set. With the Hawks trailing 17-12, QU used a four point run of their own to pull the score to 17-15. The Miners were able to regroup and take a 25-22 set win to grab the early lead.
QU looked to gain the early advantage in the second set, grabbing an early 7-3 lead behind a pair of
Bekah Raebel (Waterford, WI / Waterford Union) kills. QU looked to have cruised to an easy set win with the score at 22-14. The Miners rallied for six straight points to cut the lead to 22-20.
Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, AZ / Sandra Day O'Connor) recorded a block and the final kill of the set to tie the match at one set a piece.
Missouri S&T quickly turned the momentum around in the third set by grabbing 9-5 lead over the Hawks. The Miners held a 19-12 lead late in the set and looked to gain a 2-1 set advantage. QU was able to bring the score to 22-20 after several Missouri S&T errors. The Miners took the next three points and took a 2-1 set lead.
The Hawks used 10 kills by captains Raebel, Licurgo and
Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, WI / Denmark) to win the fourth set 25-22 and force a deciding fifth set.
QU jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the final set. The Miners were determined to come away with the victory and tied the score at 10-10 after trailing early. The Hawks scored the final five points to claim the five set victory.
"I'm proud of the way we battled back after starting off a little slow. We've had several tough matches like this before and I think that allowed us to understand waht we needed to do to get a win against a good Missouri S&T team." head coach Abby Moser added after the win.
Raebel lead the Hawks with 14 kills. Licrugo added 13 kills and McMonagle notched 11 kills.
The Hawks improved to 3-13 on the season and 2-6 in the GLVC. QU returns home to face McKendree Friday (Hawktober 6th) in its next GLVC contest.
