QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team fell to McKendree in four sets Friday evening (Hawktober 6). McKendree defeated the Hawks 25-16, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23.
QU was unable to find the rhythm in the first set, falling behind 13-4. The Bearcats were able to ride this lead to a comfortable 25-16 win in the opening set.
The Hawks looked to respond by jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the second set. McKendree would not go away, eventually taking a 14-13 lead. The Hawks were never able to regain the lead and lost the second set 25-21.
QU and McKendree traded points for the early portion of the third set. The Hawks used a four point run to take a 8-5 lead. QU's largest lead came as the score read 19-14. The Hawks held the lead for the remainder of the third set and cut the lead to 2-1 in favor of McKendree.
The Hawks road the set win to a 4-0 lead in the fourth set. The Hawks stretched their lead to as large as 12-3. The Bearcats won seven of the next eight points to trim the Hawks lead to 13-10.
QU pushed its lead to 16-10 before the Bearcats took six of the next eight points to trim the lead to 18-16. QU took a 23-22 lead late in the set and look to send the match to a deciding fifth set.
The Bearcats took the next three points to win the set 25-23.
Bekah Raebel (Waterford, WI / Waterford Union) lead the Hawks with 16 kills and
Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, AZ / Sandra Day O'Connor) added 14 kills.
QU fell to 3-14 on the year and 2-7 in the GLVC. McKendree improved to 13-3 and 8-0 in the GLVC.
The Hawks battle Maryville Saturday (Hawktober 7) at Pepsi Arena at 3:00 p.m.
