QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team defeated Maryville in straight sets, 25-23, 25-14, 25-13, Saturday afternoon (Hawktober 7).
Senior
Bekah Raebel (Waterford, WI / Waterford Union) came out firing in the first set, collecting six kills. The Hawks looked to take control after a five point run gave them a 12-7 lead. Maryville would not go away, answering with a three point run of their own.
The Hawks looked to be in control as the score read 21-18 in favor of QU. Maryville tied the score at 21-21 but committed an attack error to give the Hawks the lead back at 22-21. QU held on for the set win, 25-23.
QU road the momentum from the set win, jumping out to a 4-1 laed. The Saints rallied, retaking the lead at 9-8. Four straight Maryville errors and a kill by
Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, WI / Denmark) gave the Hawks a 13-9 lead.
The Hawks won 12 of the next 17 points to take a comfortable 25-14 set win.
Another fast start for the Hawks saw a 7-2 lead in the third set. The Hawks never looked back and took the third set 25-13.
QU was lead by senior
Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, AZ / Sandra Day O'Connor) who totaled 11 kills on 18 attacks (.611). Miranda Rodriquez (Joliet, IL / Joliet Catholic) tallied 21 assists for the Hawks.
The Hawks next match is a part of the Midwest Regional Crossover in Aurora, IL next Friday and Saturday (Hawktober 13-14).
